Something with this info doesn't sound right.
If the car is built and shipped or is due to arrive in Melbourne in January then a VIN has to be available if for no other reason that the VIN forms the freight ID for the car to get onto the ship.
The minimum shipping time is about 38 days. Our car left on December 1st and arrives in Melbourne on January 7th. If your are going to get your car in January in Melbourne I think there are only two ships likley to deliver it - the Don Carlos, currently off the west coast of Africa and due on January 7th and the Tamerlane- which is taking the longer route via the US, Fiji and NZ. This route takes about 50 days.
Our car is due in Melbourne on January 7th. We received the VIN about 1 week before it was loaded and confirmation of it being on the Don Carlos about 24 hours after it left Bremerhaven.
Ask for a NADCON print out or get the VIN. That is the only way you'll know what is going on.

So I had an afternoon full of meetings after which I have now had a chance to consider the phone call and I agree something isn't sitting right.
I had received a call from the dealer direct in mid November saying that the middle of Jan delivery wasn't going to happen but they didn't know any further so this call was a bit of a surprise.
I have also got the email notifications from VW and it hasn't changed from "Built" to anything resembling shipped.
My theories are that Maxxia have been told wrong information from VW and are just passing the message on or that Maxxia want me to sign the final contract documents before the end of the year in order to meet some quotas and they are bending the truth to get me to do this. I was asked to complete the documents but I replied that I had a subject to test drive clause and will be awaiting that test drive before I sign anything. This has probably backfired on them because if they were honest and said it will be May then I probably would be going to get a GLA250 tomorrow and they would have signed documents by end of the week.
I am not too fussed on whether it is end of Jan or March or May now, I needed it for a post Christmas holiday and this hasn't happened so whenever it arrives next year, there is no real difference but I will speak with the dealer tomorrow and clarify with Maxxia, including getting the NADCON printout so that I can provide more accurate information for everyone here.
Thanks for all the advice!
Strange... From the email sent from VW showing the status of my order... my original R-line picture has been replaced with the highline model????
Anyone else notice this change on their status?
(I know it's kind of desperate, but I have an urge to check every couple of days for changes...)
Just after some second opinions about getting a 162 TSI Highline with the Comfortline rims/tyres instead for $52.35k (so I can fit snow chains) - Personally I think the Comfortline rims look better but not sure if it could affect resale & driving dynamics and what a fair change in purchase price would be? (Comfortline rims/tyres would be a lot cheaper but there is the swap over cost...)

Just buy some aftermarket (or second-hand OEM) rims to put on when you go to the snow. Problem solved.

I think our car is off the west coast of Africa aboard the Don Juan. It may have sunk because it is out of tracking range.
The ship is due to dock in East London-----[google it] in 7 or 8 days, then head to Melbourne by the 7thh Jan. A couple of weeks to get through customs for plating, then to Geelong and it should be ours. Maybe.
