Yep the dsg can be jerky in low gears remember its a computer controlled manual gearbox not a automatic gearbox which has a fluid coupling between flywheel and the gearbox itself (torque converter) they will always be smoother than a dsg
The dsg came about because you get worse fuel economy with the auto box the fluid coupling robs power and increases fuel use that is the main reason for going dsg
It's not perfect but you soon get used to it i have the dq381 wet 7 speed in my car and its very good better than the dq250 6 speed wet i used to have in my mark 6
The wife has a dry 7 speed dq200 in her new 7.5 and it is good but i notice it is a little more jerky than mine i think the wet clutch system is better at smoothing out the jerks

It is definitely NOT smooth, most of my low speed manoeuvres are jerky Are DSG Jerky in 1st Gear and prone to Failure ?
I wish VW Australia would offer a standard 8 Speed Auto with Torque Converter as they do on the Tiguan in Canada and other countries

I bet 90% of people would pick a standard auto if it was an option

I would rather have a smooth and reliable ride and use more fuel than a jerky one. But that's me

I would not be surprised to see the DSG go the way of the Dodo in a few years as the original reasons for its existence has largely passed. These days the torque converter can be locked up at very low rpm and motors are more powerful, both problems that made VW use it in the first place. Audi have gone back to a TC box in one of its new models and it will be interesting to see if that continues with further new releases.

Isn't that referring to the same gear box? An 8 speed which is the 7speed DSG but they include reverse when counting gears so call it an 8 speed?

No, in Canada, USA and other countries they get an 8 speed auto with torque converter

Tiguan Gear Box options - see 2nd Generation Transmission section: Volkswagen Tiguan - Wikipedia

"For North America, a 2.0 liter TSI four cylinder gasoline engine is mated with an eight speed Torque Converter automatic transmission.

    * 7-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) with sport mode and Tiptronic function
    * 8-speed Torque Converter with sport mode and Tiptronic function"
