Cost of extended warrranty

I've received conflicting information but I have the PDS for the Genuine VW Extended Warranty and on page 5 it states it is underwritten by Allianz Insurance.

The process in making a claim after the 3rd year may well be as you suggested.

I'm going to go through it fully soon but so far has a reasonable amount of stuff to help them wriggle out of a claim. Will decide after I've gone through the PDS properly.

I thought one was different to the other, the genuine VW warranty vs the one underwritten by Allianz.

I was under the impression the genuine one is no different to the factory 3 year one that if something breaks it will be covered and they just fix it at the dealership with no fuss to you. The other you have to fill out paper work and send it off to Allianz for assessment etc..

I could be wrong but

Genuine VW extended warranty is definitely underwritten by Allianz, has been for at least 11 years (unless things have changed recently.) Dealer has to get authorisation of Allianz before going ahead with the repair but there's no paperwork for the customer to fill in.

Is it the same warrranty if you buy before the car is registered vs say at the end of your initial 3 year warranty and you want to extend it then

The difference is cost. Buying up front should cost $2050 (recently increased from $2000) however buying an aftermarket one (ie. anytime after delivery of vehicle) is more expensive. I've been quoted 2 different prices for the aftermarket ones; $2316 and $2750. Apparently those aftermarket ones are identical to the Genuine VW Extended Warranty. I've compared all 3 PDS' and they are identical.

My current dealer's finance manager states they only have the Genuine VW extended warranty for $2750 whereas other dealers have it for $2050. The one who has it for $2050 can't supply it for cars not bought at their dealership. The other dealer that has it for $2316 can offer it for new or 2nd hand cars (still within the 3 year warranty).

I just got quoted $2750, from the finance manager, for VW genuine extended warranty with unlimited kms.
It's easily $500 more than I expected to pay and thought people were getting them for $2100ish.

For those who have bought extended warranty, what did you get (VW genuine which is underwritten by Allianz or another 3rd party one) and how much. To make it easy if you can specify the spec of your vehicle (Trendline, Comfortline, Highline) otherwise if its in your sig I'll just refer to that.

They usually start with an ambit claim, tell them it's too expensive and you don't want it at that price so you'll do without. I'd be very surprised if they don't make a better offer. Make sure they understand you're prepared to walk away without it.

If these 'extended warranties' have a PDS and are underwritten by an insurer (Allianz) it's an insurance product and not a manufacturers warranty? I think I've seen it called something like 'extended warranty protection' versus an actual extension of your factory warranty - indicating it's actually an extended warranty.

So basically, you're paying $2k for insurance against the cost of a repair IF the manufacturer admits to a warranty defect that rears it's head in year 4 or year 5 of you owning the vehicle (assuming these are 2 years).

If they don't admit to it being a warranty issue rather than wear & tear, then its pretty likely that it won't be covered anyhow. I'm pretty sure Allianz won't pay out a claim against your warranty/policy unless the dealer says it's a warranty issue.

Personally, it all seems questionable from a value point of view. Not something I think I'll be spending $2k on but really interested to hear from VW owners who have had repairs done and paid for under these extended warranties after the factory warranty has run out.

In the end I didn't get the extended warranty through my dealer. Southern VW have an aftermarket one underwritten by Allianz, the PDS looks identical to Solitaire's genuine VW warranty. The Southern VW one is $2200 so not much more than Solitaire's, $2050. The benefit of the one from Southern VW is that you can decide nearer to the end of 3 years if you would like to stump up the money for it.

Regarding the PDS, all the ones I looked at were identical except the one offered by Barry Maney VW in Mt Gambier which was different again in details and cost.

If you're happy to go ahead then do so. If I had bought another Golf, I would definitely get the extended warranty considering I had the clutch changed 3x in 3 years. The Tiguan doesn't seem to have the same clutch issues as it has a higher rated clutch, anyway touch wood! I'm happy to wait 2.5years to see how things go, the extra $200 cost for the warranty has been absorbed in advanced by the savings on the purchase price of the car.

I got the VW factory extended warranty $1818 ex GST looking at contract. The dealer has to notify VW Aust Group before delivery.
Like others - taking into account VW history of DSG issues, complex electronics and nav systems the 4/5 year warranty was for peace of mind.
