I wonder if the latest iOS update will solve your issues..

If you’ve got a new iPhone — the XR, XS, or XS Max — and have found that it can unexpectedly disconnect from CarPlay when in your vehicle, iOS 12.1.3 should get things working as expected again

What about charging your phone? Is this only CarPlay connectivity issue or also charging too?

Today I’ve noticed that google maps nav sound doesn’t always work. 2 out of 4 driving sessions today (800kms) I had the music mute as it was ‘saying directions’ but was in fact silent. I couldn’t see a common cause.

But I did update my phone and google maps app last night...

Thanks Guys, sorry forgot to update on this. The issue was using non standard cables, as soon as I used the genuine Apple cables it works absolutely fine without any issues. Thought I’d already tried this but obviously not!

Yeah, some cables are definitely better than others. I find the eBay cheapies to be generally useless. Which sucks because I bought a bunch of spiral coiled ones...
    Cheers

Yes definitely hit and miss with 3rd party cables! Usually fine for charging though

Make sure any 3rd party are ‘mfi’ (made for iPhone) certified/labelled.

I bought some MFI (Kogan brand) and 'genuine " cables from Kogan...neither lasted or worked as well as  store originals

Kogan are a bit scummy in relation to business practices and morals. I’d report to Apple about the cables. Chances are it’s a false label...
