I reckon you’d visually see a difference, but other than that it’d be all but indifferent - the car’s got the torque to haul the taller tyre. If I was going to tweak the sizes though, i’d go for 255/40r19. Personally however, i’m sticking with 245/40

Thanks guys this is awesome info - and well timed for me!

I've got a passat rline wagon 2017 and need to replace the tyres so thinking 245/40 r19 Michelin pilot sport 4 s.

Cheapest I've found in Brisbane is $385 with Jax. Does this sound about the right price?

There is Tempe tyres down in Sydney doing them for $347 so I'll try to get them price matched.

What would be the quietest tyre (least road noise) for a B8 MY18 passat 132TSI?
generally do weekend drives, as i dont drive to work - mostly a highway cruiser.

no matter what tyre, does driving on coarse chip road is too loud?
i understand it will be louder, but i feel its higher that what i originally thought would be on a coarse chip road@highway speeds.

Not sure if my passat isnt as tight as others on rubber seals.

i do hear a lot of wind noise in smooth highways.

Dealership gives the usual BS like, "its how it is" , "not hearing anything abnormal" etc.

i am on a factory fitted Pirelli. Done around 7k and rotated once at 5k.

On a side note, when the car is stationary & idling, do you hear engine noise?
I do now, after i switched to 98+ from 7-11 (post 2 tank fulls).
    Previously it was BP 98+.

Will try to measure the dB to share here, for some quantitative assessment.

Check your tyre pressures - low pressures will have higher noise levels. Aussie coarse chip roads are widely acknowledged in the international tyre industry to be some of the loudest sealed highway surfaces in the world.

P7 cinturato’s are not what I would call a quiet tyre, but they are not known for being overly loud either.

Road and wind noise is virtually impossible to quantify because there are so many impacting factors.

Yeah, PS4's are about the same noise wise, maybe a tad quieter. A shedload lighter as they don't have that seal inside stuff in them like the P7 does.

i reckon both my wife’s and my car will be due for hoops within 10k km. Hers are 215/55R17, mine are 245/40R19. Both standard P7 at the moment, considering options.
    So I just bought a set (x4) of Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 (Made In Germany) 245/40 R19 98Y XL (up from 235/40 R19).
    Fresh stock, Week 38 2018.

I haven't put them on yet as I am waiting until Mid June before we go on a Road Trip to Canberra and the Alpine Region...

PM if you are interested to know where I got them, as I got an excellent price!!!

Has anyone any further comments on tyre noise, that is what good tyres are quiet, alternatively which are noisy to avoid.

One comment from Rocket36 above that Conti's were noisy - which Conti's were they. How did the Turanza ER33 go? Anyone else with some good info?

Pirelli tyres are on sale for a few days at the big retailers if anyone is looking for tyres. I just bought a set of P7 Cinturato for my Passat Alltrack at $210 per tyre.
