I just took delivery of my new MY18 Passat 206TSI R Line Sedan. I found this forum by doing some research on the car, and I found a lot of great information here. In fact, I read every post in the thread from beginning to end – well done to all people who posted and made this a very informative discussion.

There’s not much I can add technically about the car that hasn’t already been discussed. Perhaps the only point of difference is that mine is an MY18, built September ’17 but compliance plated January ’18. From what I understand there is not much difference other than the updated Discover Pro system with the larger screen that is installed.

I have found the car to be fantastic to drive so far, its steering and dynamics are really sharp, and to me it feels like I am driving a much smaller and very agile car. That may be in part due to coming out of driving an MY15 Subaru Liberty 3.6R –whilst it’s a brilliant car also, its a bit heavy in the steering and has quite a bit of body roll and a harsh ride when not on smooth roads. The new VW leaves itfor dead as a driver’s car. Anyway, the Subaru is now our ‘second’ car, and the Mrs is very happy to be driving it whilst I took the upgrade.

The lack of Dynaudio upgrade really was the only disappointment for me. As a serious audiophile, I would have paid the extra in a heartbeat. The Discover Pro audio is adequate, but really lacks bass, and the mid range sounds awful – I turn it right down on the equalizer. Also, I am struggling to get the gesture control working – not sure if I am doing something wrong, or if there is a problem, but only about 1 in every 10 swipes seems to work.

I noticed somebody asked about the sedan version being discontinued. The salesman I dealt with confirmed that this is the case. Only the wagon will be available in future in 206 TSI R line format due to the fact that the Arteon has been launched. They are apparently looking to free up manufacturing capacity, hence sedan buyers will really only have the option of an Arteon. It’s unfortunate because the Arteon is a much more expensive car – I couldn’t have stretched the budget into the early to mid $70k range, even if it meant getting a sleeker looking design and a heads up display.

Which brings me to the next question people ask – what sort of deals can be had now that the model is well into its life cycle. VW Australia is advertising a special of $59,990 on road for the sedan, but I managed to push pretty hard and got mine for $54,500 on road. It’s white, so no metallic paint and no sunroof, but to me, that seemed like a hell of a good deal for a car of this specification, especially considering it was not floor stock and was an MY18, delivered brand spanking new from the warehouse with a January ’18 plate. It undercut the Arteon by almost $20k, as they are not real keen on discounting it since it’s anew model. A no-brainer decision really, and it seems I got in at the right time since the sedan will be discontinued.

So, this is Passat number 3 for me, having owned both a B5 2.8 V6 Wagon, and a B6 V6 FSI 4Motion Sedan in the past. I have always loved the Passat and it just keep getting better!

Hi people, I've been through this thread before buying a 206 wagon so thanks for the info. My first post is to share something quite concerning that happened to my car. Strangely, the chrome exhaust holes on the bumper are actually not real and are sealed. Never noticed until after a country drive in sports mode the exhaust completely melted the cover. Turns out the exhaust tips are meant to point downwards and not straight out like mine were. I'd advise people to check. Does anyone have the holes uncovered and with straight pipes (like how I would assume would be the normal way to do it)?

On my 206 MY18 the pipes are straight but the pipes stop about 4 inches from the chrome exhaust holes, but there is no cover.

Sounds like a manufacturing defect - that the openings in the bumper were not punched out.

Comforline and TDI should be downwards

206 should be straight out single 2 sides

Crikey that sounds like an embarrassing oversight. Let us know how you go with the dealer.

It's not an oversite. The chrome exhaust "cut outs" in the bumper aren't actually cut out. At least not on my TDI Highline (which has the R-Line body kit the same as the 206 TSI). I can't imagine there's two separate R-Line bumpers.

My exhaust is behind my rear bumper with the tips pointing down. It would be odd if the tips were pointing straight back at a bumper without cutouts.

So I would say the tips needs to be turned down. Even if there was a hole for the exhaust, straight through tips would still force hot air against plastic.

Thanks, the dealership is saying that checking the VIN, it should have turned down pipes and no cut out. Any chance you could send a private message to me with your VIN so the dealership can check that this combination exists? Currently they won't believe me. I told them my preference would be to have straight pipes and cut out if that is what other 206 r lines have.
