Thanks CaseySP & 206Harvard for your responses.

I had a chat to RACV today and they are willing to drop down from $1,247.31 to $1,081.60. Catch is excess goes up from $625 to $750 and I forego the windscreen option. Better, but ....

I've done some extensive research online and prices fluctuate wildly for comprehensive car insurance. The cheapest are Budget Direct and Ozicare at $687 (with $800 excess) and the most expensive is Coles at $2,990 (with $850 excess). As mentioned by 206Harvard, most of the cheapest options seem to be underwritten by Auto & General Insurance.

    Budget Direct $687 ($800 excess)
    Ozicare $687 ($800 excess)
    Dodo $691 ($800 excess)
    Australia Post $708 ($800 excess)
    Virgin Money $715 ($800 excess)
    1Cover $748 ($800 excess)
    Bingle $1,039.39 ($795 excess)
    Allianz $1077.14 ($850 excess)
    RACV $1,081.60 ($750 excess)
    National Bank $1,122.39 ($850 excess)
    GIO $1,261.91 ($850 excess)
    Suncorp $1,239.93 ($800 excess)
    Progressive $1,276 ($800 excess)
    APIA $1,295.25 ($600 excess)
    AAMI $1,313.58 ($745 excess)
    CGU $1,463.11 ($800 excess)
    Real Insurance $1,669.44 ($800 excess)
    Commonwealth Bank $1,824.04 ($550 excess)
    Woolworths $1,848.48 ($800 excess)
    ANZ $1,875.95 ($600 excess)
    Coles $2,990 ($850 excess)

Other than RACV, I have not spoken to any of the other listed insurers and the prices listed here are straight from online quotes. Now I have to wade through all the fine print. Interesting times ahead!

I'm a big believer in 'you get what you pay for...', however - I doubt Coles is the way to go!

Totally agree Chopper, but since when does a semi-premium car - which is a depreciating asset - cost more to insure than a house?!

You can't crash a house into a Volkswagen Passat but you can crash a Passat into a house. Worked in insurance many years ago and it's ticked a few of the boxes that get its points up. Reasonably high purchase price, a lot of good bits that are expensive to replace (think about the headlights and sensors in the bumper) plenty of power ect. Possibly tarnished by other hi po all wheel drive cars with similar on paper numbers.

I am in Sydney, 27 y.o this year, full license, never had any accident and it costs me $1400 (inc NCD protection, windscreen and hire) with excess of $2000 to insure a 132tsi comf passat (agreed value 43k) WHAT THE HECK?

Just checked ours again, $585 through Aust Post.
2 drivers only, both over 40 with max ncd preserved.
    No windscreen cover though.
It cost me about the same to insure this car for twice the value of my previous Golf....go figure.

Why so much more for the 206TSI Passat over the 140TDI Highline with R-Line & Lux Pack? Market value.

Other factors increasing my premium include living in a high risk area, parking on the street at night, parking at a unsecured open car park at work during the day as well as the kilometers I travel to work each day (approximately 12,000 ks - 15,000 ks per annum).

Working in my favour are that I'm a Rating 1 driver with a sterling driving record.

    The insurance quest continues ...

Suburb is a big factor. I live in West Perth. It's not a bad area but for some reason it's $500 more a year than the next suburb over. That's with Allianz.

My small looking altercation with a kangaroo ~ 20k worth of damage. So these cars are expensive to repair.

It is in the manual. From memory you use the trip reset button. Hold it for 3-5 secs and I think a menu will appear.
