    Tyre rotation and TPMS?

I'm about to rotate the tyres on my B6 Passat. A mechanic told me I might have to use VCDS to tell the tyre pressure monitoring system that the wheels are now in different positions. I wouldn't have thought this is necessary?

    Does anyone know?

The tpms sensors are not separately identified.
The tpms receiver must have some way of differentiating based on timing of the signals along with wheel speeds.
I swapped my sensors for newer B7 sensors and direct tpms module (shows individual pressures per tyre) and there was no calibration or identification required.

I've rotated my tyres without any issues. I'll let you know which tyre it identifies next time I get a flat.

There a sensor in each wheel arch to read the pressure sensor data.

The sensor is inside the tyre, part of the valve stem.
The receiver in B6 Passat is in the CCM module which is mounted behind the glovebox.

Maybe I should call the sensor in the wheel arch "antenna", whatever, that's what I meant.
I have a PDF doc in my computer explains how VW TPMS works. I'd love to upload once I am on the computer.

A quick google search can show the similar info, please read link below:
Volkswagen Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Indirect and Direct | my-gti.com

"VW along with most other manufacturers fit antenna’s in the wheel arches which serves two purposes, the transmitters can have lower power output which means longer battery life/lighter weight and moving wheels around doesn’t require reconfiguration of the sytem."

And thanks to everyone for your input. I'll happily rotate the wheels today without worrying about the TPMS.

Thought the ones NOT with wheel sensors work with the ABS and read the difference in revs from the others when it gets a flat and if so throws up a warning. Mine hasnt got the flash one and Manual says thats how it works. Had to recalibrate when I put the unused spare on the front right

B6 and B7 high use direct tyre monitoring, not the indirect method via abs like in the Golf etc
