    RNS-510 changed colors overnight

The color scheme of the RNS-510 in my passat changed overnight from the usual premium colorskin to the plain one with white buttons. Additionally, I think the compass is no longer available in the MFD. Am concerned this might be due to a faulty comfort module or similar? Has anyone else had similar problems in the past?

You'll need to get a fault scan done with VCDS or similar to find what the issue is.
If I were to guess I would say the coding on the RNS has been reset to defaults.

That's not an uncommon fault and nothing to worry about unless you aren't getting a GPS signal.
Coding doesn't look complete but I don't have a unit in front of me right now to check what those coding bits mean.
Also check your canbus gateway installation list to ensure addresses 37/56 are enabled.

Ok, am not sure how to chek if the addresses are enabled. I tried changing the display to premium, and am getting a message about an un-initialized control module. Safe to proceed?

Yes just follow the suggestion and use the recommended values for WSC/Equipment. Some control modules do not like having all zeroes for these values.

Ok, I managed to get the colors adjusted by coding it. But today after three days it's back to the original color scheme again. Am wondering if this coding is stored in the unit iself or in a different module? The RNS-510 has been very slow to start up in the last year, so I've been suspecting the hard drive might have some bad sectors or similar.

But I am also seing that an automatic scan fails to reach a few other modules as well, am unsure if this is a more serious problem or can be ignored?

The RNS itself stores the coding. In flash memory, not on the hard drive.

If you are having problems with other modules as well the most obvious candidate would be the canbus gateway. Fairly quick and easy to swap it out with a new one.

Been to busy for any updates until now. I've tried changing the coding back in the headunit to use the premium colors, and enable BAP which then gives me the correct display, and lets the MFD present the navigation and audio information again. But it keeps resetting overnight. I assume this is due to faults in the RNS-510s flash memory. Is there any way to fix this other than replacing the unit?

Edit: just adding that the headunit is very slow to start from cold. I'm already down the driveway long before the rear view camera is up and running.

When I had SatNav problems like this on my Golf Mk V, after being sent to the dealer twice for diagnosis (and being told its "out of warranty"), it was the battery...
