Recoding new CANBUS replacement module

Hi there,


My car has the original (2006) CANBUS module which I need to replace (due to battery drain issues) as I'm updating the radio.

I have VCDS cable and recall somewhere in the program is an option to "copy all the CANBUS codes"?.

The question : will this VCDS option allow me to faithfully copy everything from my original CANBUS, save the file to laptop and replace/overwrite the codes which are contained in the "new used CANBUS"? As distinct from having to go to a dealer to have my "new old CANBUS" module "re-coded" ?

The canbus gateway module coding is very short.
its just a string of numbers.
Make a note of this and then when you install the new one, write this string to the new gateway (assuming you are using another 3C0 gateway, and not a 7N0 gateway. )
The other data you need is the 'installation list' which is a list of all the other modules in the car. this needs to be duplicated into the new gateway so that all the modules know how to talk to one another.

Thanks kamold, I think my current CANBUS is the old 7N0 (I recall seeing that when using VCD) and the "new/old CANBUS" I have is the 3C0 (see photo)



I assume that "CANBUS string of numbers" would also feature prominently somewhere in the VCD? Also where do I find, copy/save the "installation list" Is that an option from VCD? Cheers

There is no copy/save for the installation list on its own, but in the 3C0 gateways the installation list is actually embedded in the coding, so you should only need to copy/paste the coding which will be something like:
FDA3FF07524602002003

7N0 are newer gateways, and if installed in a B6 Passat will result in a steering column lock fault.

Sorry, I must have misunderstood about which one is the newer type. Suffice to say my current CANBUS is older? than then 3C0 but in any case I have been told it can not be updated to prevent the battery drain issues.

So that I understand this right - when I enter THAT coding (similar to the one above) number in, the CANBUS will know what installation list I need for my car? Eg. right hand drive, sunroof, climatronic module, trailer module, etc ? Or those have to be coded in "manually" If that is the case there would be at least 40-50 modules, probes etc to code in.?

Your existing and the new gateway should have the same options and coding.
You should be able to just copy and paste the coding string from the old to the new and away you go.

Ok, but it means I have to copy one by one each coding, perhaps from 30-40 different modules there are? But if there was such option I could save those individually to later copy and paste individually? But if not, I'd have to write each coding down to later be able to "reproduce" and enter the right code when new CANBUS module is in.

Ah, one other things - I read somewhere that the new CANBUS has a longer coding string or does this only refer to the newer 7N0?

You only need to copy the sequence of letters and numbers in coding. That's the coding string for example like I posted above.
What's your current coding string for 19 gateway?

Sorry mate but I would not know of the top of my head and the last report from VCDS, which I presume would have this, is on a laptop not with me at this point in time. But say - my current 19 gateway coding was "FDA3FF07524602002003" Ok, I'd go and enter/replace what is in the new/old CANBUS. What do I do next? I have to code each individual module eg. climatronic, trailer, sunroof, etc.? Perhaps it's simply too late at night to comprehend what needs to be done?

Each module has it's own coding.
You are only changing one module (the gateway) so you only need to restore it's coding. Nothing else loses anything.
Its just that the gateway is the switch that all the other parts use to talk to one another.
