R36 Rain & Light Sensor Troubles

    Hi guys,

Bit of an odd one, for about a year every now and then my R36 will think it is night time and flick the lights on in broad daylight in full sun. I've also noticed it tends to "get stuck" for lack of a better term, like if I drive under cover it goes night, then when I go back out into the sun it stays thinking it's night. I can turn the switch to Off and then back to Auto but even after waiting minutes it still flicks all the lights back on. The only thing that fixes it is completely turning the car off/taking the key out and waiting.

I checked VCDS and there was an occasional fault logged on the rain and light sensor. Obvious fix, right? $450 replaced sensor later... not fixed. I haven't seen the fault in VCDS but the same "It's night time all the time" behaviour remains.
I have no issues at all with rain sensing, and the car always detects it is night when it is actually dark. It is only day time I have problems.

Any other ideas? There are some real gurus with these cars on here, I'm hoping someone might have something I can try.

My RLS logs an error periodically (non communicating) but it doesn't seem to have any real negative affects.
I do leave my lights on the off position most of the time however so perhaps I'm masking symptoms that you are seeing?
You can adjust the thresholds in the adaptation channels of the RLS, do you know if the settings on your new module match your old?
If not post your adaptation channel settings and I can post mhy factory settings and see if they are matching.

Oh, interesting. I didn't know the thresholds were adjustable, I'll check them and report back when it cools down outside. I always leave my switch in Auto, I've not had a reason to ever change it other than this, or when using the rear fog on rare occasions. Interesting yours logs faults too, but I think from memory mine wasn't a non-communicate it was something more faulty sounding. I tend to not pay a lot of attention to modules that throw errors but work fine as well, as there are several things my car always whinges about that are functionally perfect. (Parking sensor module in particular logs a fault every single time I ever shift into reverse, most likely to do with the dealer fit reverse camera.)

The new sensor is behaving the same as the old one I think, maybe a bit worse, it's hard to say as the problem is intermittent, I can go for weeks and not see the issue, and then have it happen twice in two days. I know for sure it was replaced and not missed, as they accidentally put my bluetooth mic inside the plastic cover instead of outside it when they were putting it all back together.

It's frustrating, as the part was really expensive, a lot more than I thought heh. If it turns out I didn't need to replace it... well, lesson learned.

I have that same issue, haven't thought much about it to be honest until I read your post. Mine has been doing it for a while so I just checked back over my service receipts and no mention of any faults found noted on there. I haven't concerned myself too much over it as headlights on really just increase your visibility during the day. Report back if you find anything.

Sorry it's just coding which controls thresholds, there is no adaptation available for that module.
