    R36 MY10 and MY10.5 Differences

Ever since I was lucky enough to purchase an MY10.5 R36 I’ve been trying to work out exactly what the difference were with the MY10. A few searches through the forum didn’t help a lot – one suggestion was that the Media Device Interface (MDI) in the glovebox was now standard, which meant you couldn’t option the 6 CD changer.

The classification on Carsales didn’t help either and there is some confusion as to which cars are which.

Anyway through a bit of research I have worked it out and thought I would share it with those interested on the forum. For the sake of brevity, I won’t discuss the differences between the MY08 and MY09 as I think most people interested would know what they are.

MY10 – Compliance October 2009 onwards, Chassis ID WVWZZZ3CZ9E######. Not a lot of difference to the MY09 – has the same Climatronics (referred to as Mk5), which had been on the R36 since the beginning (MY08.) You were able to select a lot more options such as ACC Adaptive Cruise Control ($2,000) Lane Change Assist ($1,000) DCC Adaptive Chassis Control ($1,650) and Dark tinted rear glass ($500). RVC Rear View Camera was a separately ordable option (on wagons only) with either RCD 510 or RNS510 ($700) and RNS510 was revised down to a $2,500 option. The Glove Box mounted CD Changer was no longer an option.

MY10.5 – Compliance February 2010 onwards, Chassis WVWZZZ3CZAE######. Differences with MY10 was the new Climatronics (Mk6), MDI was standard as was the Dark tinted rear window and side windows, 65% light absorbing.

A few interesting points to make. VW started producing the MY10.5 in November 2009, but didn’t start compliance until February 2010, so technically there are no 2009 MY10.5. Conversely it stands to reason that thereare no 2010 MY10 R36s, despite the fact that Carsales allows you to register a car for sale with those details.

This is where it gets interesting. Only the Passats have the 10.5 designations Why? Well CCs (not really Passats) had already moved to the new Climatronics with the MY10, so no need to have a 10.5 designation. MY10 Golfs were the new Mk6 released in October 2009, so they came out with the new Climatronics anyway. (The GTI and R weren’t released until the 2010 calendar year.)

To summarise, the easiest way to check whether it is an MY10.5 is via the later Climatronics. It also needs to be February 2010 Australian Compliance and a chassis number with the letters CZAE in it (not CZ9E.)

Always thought mine is MY10, interesting....
Mine was build in Nov 2009 and compliance in Feb 2010 with the VIN matches your VIN description. Mine matches all your MY10.5 descriptions So mine is MY10.5 instead.

But MDI was on my option list...

I have a scan of the Australian Passat brochure that was printed in February 2010 - so MY10.5. The MDI is listed as a standard feature in the V6 Highline and R36.

Do you know is the RNS510 system in the 10.5 comes with the ability to Bluetooth Audio stream?

    Cheers in advance,

The RNS510 does not have bluetooth capability on its own. However it has the ability to have an external bluetooth module plugged into it which then gives full telephone and bluetooth audio (A2DP) streaming functions.
I don't believe BT was ever a standard feature on AU delivered R36s.

Thanks for getting back to me Kamold, just picked up my MY10.5 Wagon today, loving it but was surprised that it didn't have any bluetooth, may have to do the retrofit, have you enabled Bluetooth/how much did it cost you if you don't mind me asking & what was the process like?

    Cheers,

    30min install.
New module plugs in behind the Nav unit, mic in the headliner, 5 mins of coding with software to tell the car what it has installed.
If you're in Sydney happy to help you out

I'm not in Sydney at the moment, but I really appreciate the offer! If I'm in sydney at some point I'll be sure to reach out, the coding would probably be my biggest issue. I noticed i do have voice control for my nav, would it use the same mic next to the interior light controls?

Yes if you already have a mic that can be used.
