Have the exact issue on my MY10 R36 with 80,000kms. I've had it for 12 months and it's always been shuddery on take-off. Comparable to a manual with a worn clutch/flywheel.

It also clunks when going from D to N, and usually takes a couple of seconds to engage R. Also, when decelerating rather quickly there's a clunk when it goes from 2nd to 1st - but not apparent when smoothly braking.

The problem has not gotten worse for the 12 months I've had it. It was only noticed on the last service by the mechanic that it's "jerky" and is an "issue". Was told to see if there was a software update from VW, but no success.

So, I'm just treating it as normal until it does get worse - hopefully it doesn't!

A powerful Car like an R36 is bound to show some signs of wear and tear after 4 or 5 years. You can imagine the strain those clutches are under with such a powerful engine and so much grip being fed Back through the drive chain from four wheels. Not a light car either. To be honest nobody buys a car like this that because they like the colour!
In saying this though it will probably happily shudder for years to come until inevitably something gives.

Have the same with my 08 R36. Only done 40k and really only does it when coasting in traffic. Like a large slow moving line of cars at traffic light. Almost like trying to creap forwards in a manual with just clutch no/or very little throttle.

    Mine does the same.

Am going to take it to get checked out in the coming weeks. I'm at 56,000k's so am thinking it's just the DSG service and will be all good. Will report back with my findings when I get a chance.

So this was a pretty long time ago, but I've just had to have my mechatronics unit replaced. Mine was only a slight shudder that i probably could have lived with, but got it checked out for piece of mind.

VW Australia covered 100% of parts and 70% of labour. Then my dealer warranty covered the rest. So I would say getting shudders checked out is a good idea, before anything worse comes of it. And with everything VW is going through with emissions, I'd say they're trying to keep customers as happy as they can, any way they can right now.

My 010 Passat 1.8t is doing that, it started with a slight shudder and it got so bad you could not drive it. The dealer had it towed to his yard and he had it checked out.[by ultra tune] He said it needed a gearbox oil and filter changed not covered by warranty, but it is still doing it. Can I get a scan done on the gearbox to see if its a fault.

Your Passat will have the 7-speed dry clutch DSG - my money would be on the clutch pack, especially if the shudder occurs during partial clutch engagement (ie when taking off, or shifting).

Is it fixable, and is it hard to do

It's fixable with a new clutch pack - and assuming you don't abuse the gearbox, it's likely to be a permanent fix. As I understand it, VW redesigned the clutch pack a few years ago so it's now much more robust than the earlier ones. It's a fairly complex and lengthy job though, as far as I know.
