R36 MY10 - ever so slight shudder when taking off from a stop

Hi all

Picked up a MY10 R36 with 75,000kms on the clock recently. Never driven a DSG before so was wondering whether this is normal

Basically I get an very slight shudder when I take off from a stationery position. When I let of the brake pedal to let the car inch forward, it has a very slight shudder, nothing major, but you do notice it. Coming from driving normal automatic cars when its a completely smooth transition, im not sure whether I have a DSG/Mechatronics issue or whether this is normal

Any advice is welcome

To put it simply, NO. I had the same with mine.

I bought a MY10 (Dec 09 build) about 6 months ago with 48000kms, and after taking it in for its first service I had it bought to my attention.

I didn't pick up on it until it was pointed out to me though. I got told it could be a number of things at fault, but that it is also a common issue.....lol.

I took mine to a transmission guy and he said he's seen heaps of the 6 speed DSG come in with similar issues and some times its simply the DSG tune that needs a touch up, or could be a bad as a clutch replacement required....although he said he doesn't thing that'll be necessary in mine.

I haven't had it resolved as yet cause I was told to bare with it and only bring it in if it gets worse.

Don't bother wasting your time with a VW dealership either. They were a joke.

Anyone else with any light on the matter...

Drats, was hoping you meant no, it is normal and dont worry haha.

When you took it to the VW dealership, what did they say? guess its out of warranty for you, I do have extended warranty I believe via a 3rd party so was thinking maybe I should try and get it resolved.

I'd be interested to know what you mean by a shudder? Can you give a fuller description?

I believe a clunk and jolt is fairly normal if you apply throttle immediately after releasing the brake. If you are too quick from the brake to the accelerator, then you can 'beat' the DSG and it will clunk and give you a jolt. It's a bit like being in a normal automatic and building up revs in neutral then slamming it into drive. You can learn to modify your driving behaviour to avoid this happening.

The worst situation is when cruising around slowly in a car park looking for a free car space. Switching constantly from the accelerator to the brake then back again sounds and feels like a car with really sloppy worn universals.

Well, that's what I've found in mine anyway. Others may disagree.

OK guys, by shudder its not that severe. You know that feeling when driving a manual car, when you move from neutral to first gear and you're probably not giving it as much gas as you should while you are releasing the clutch, it's like that, but very slight. Kind of that friction point feeling. I drove the car again last night, it doesnt always happen, and when it does its quite a light shudder.

Understand what you mean by "beating" the DSG, have had that happen. Hence I left the car engage first properly first then accelerate.

lol. Who's your third party warranty through? I got one through National Warranty Company, and after the fact I've heard some horror stories about em.

The play by play with mine:
- Bought the car June 2014, and came with 12 months warranty through NWC.
- Took it in for a service with a VW specialist (not a dealer)
- VW guy mentioned the shutter and told me to head to the dealer and have it looked at and try see if VW would do a 'good-will' claim due its low mileage, or get it covered under the warranty....
- Took it to the dealer for investigation. They acknowledged the shutter and advised a DSG fluid and filter change.
- Fluid and filter changed. No improvement. Dealer told me to see if it improves in the next 2-3 weeks.
- No improvement after a month.
- Take it back to the dealer. lol Told "That's as good as it gets" (direct quote).
- Took it back to the VW guy. He laughed at their efforts and recommended a transmission specialist up the road.
- Tran guy said its not to much to be worried about unless it gets worse. Related to previous DSG's he'd seen. (As mentioned before)

So to date mine still has the shutter but it doesn't seem to be getting worse. However I'd prefer to get the issue resolved.

Another joke with the dealer was the Service Book states 'DSG Fluid and filter at 60,000kms'. The dealer said that's wrong and its due at the 4 year mark lol. When I mentioned this to the VW guy he laughed and said why does it say different in their Service book........

The thing that really got under my skin was its driving exactly the same as it has from the day I picked it up and the dealer said 'Yes there is a shutter on take off present' and then after claiming their fluid and filter work would resolve the issue, and didn't, they reckon there is nothing wrong. "That's as good as it gets"

The shutter: Its like a minor bunny hop, (like you get from poor clutch control in a manual) as you come off the brake and the car starts moving from stand still. It's more noticeable on a cold start.

What have you done regarding it so far dannyjak??

Done nothing, have only had the car for 2 weeks =) Extended 3 year warranty is with Swann, the kind you pay for when your factory warranty ends and there is an option to extend.

Spoke to another forum member who advised after a mechtronics + clutch pack change, its a bit better but a slight shudder is still there

Makes me think that is quite normal?

I wouldnt evne say its a minor bunnyhop, you can just feel a vibration I guess.

I don't know about normal. Mine leaves smoothly every time whether stopped on flat, hill, rolling, driving like a ****head. I can't say that for all of the cars I test drove though so I definitely think it's an issue, how bad will just depend on how much it annoys you I guess.

The test a long term VW mechanic gave me when I bought mine was, stop on a very steep hill, put the car in neutral, then in drive and drive off, if it hesitates, clunks, searches for a gear or does anything unusual walk away.
