    R36 MFD Error

So my MFD has been playing up of late. Twice in the last four days it has reset the clock to 0:00 and the tripmeter back to 0. Everything else is fine including the radio presets. Car starts fine though the battery is the original and over seven years old now.

Any suggestions as to what may be going on?

Sounds like you have probably answered your own question

Radio presets are stored in eeprom so losing power doesn't lose settings.

Disconnecting power to the cluster however will reset trip meter.

I'd get the battery checked out and probably replace it.

Thanks Kamold, it may well be the battery as you say.

I've done a bit of online searching for Varta batteries - specifically Batteries Direct:
    - Silver Dynamic 572 402 075 - 750CCA - $265
    - Silver Dynamic 585 400 080 - 800CCA - $316
    - Silver Dynamic AGM 595 901 085 - 850CCA - $516

Is the OEM Yuasa battery an AGM? Is the extra cost offset by a longer life?

I believe OEM would have been a VARTA battery, if you have a Yasua it's probably been replaced.
In theory AGM should last longer. Batteries are strange beasts some go for 10 years while the same model in a similar car can last 3....
I tend to stick with VARTA AGMs.
I think mine is the original which is now 9 years old but I've had to replace the battery twice so far in the Octavia in 5 years.

Hi, just replaced mine with a Varta E44, there was a discount running so I got mine for 255 shipped, but you can
CHeck out the seller below. Quick and very responsive.
Items in TrackWarrior AUStore store on eBay !.

    EDIT

An E38 will do as well.
If you can afford it go AGM over Acid any time.
Just keep in mind the 585 400 080 is a tall battery

    I stand corrected - mine is a VARTA AGM. Part No. 7PO 915 105 C
So it must be the original.

Yes, I've been told the E44 is the VARTA Silver Dynamic replacement. 585 400 080 is the F19 VARTA with a higher cranking rate. The VARTA AGM is the G14 - 585 901 085.

I was going to take it into the local Battery World to be tested tomorrow, but I've put it on a trickle charge overnight. I figure that if that can deep cycle charge my Odyssey battery from my old race car, it will charge up my AGM battery. Besides the Golf has lost its coolant from the reservoir again so its back to the dealer tomorrow. The water pump was only replaced 3,000km ago....

Depends on the type of charger. I recently got the Bosch C7. That has a separate mode for AGM charging compared to Lead Acid. Has slightly more 0.4 A more supply, but I suppose if its charging the Gel it can charge the AGM.
No idea about the 085 Battery. What I meant was teh F19 is taller in dimension. Mine is a B6 so limited space, I dont know how much space is there in the R36 Boot.

Wow that is a fairly new Golf to be needing water pump replacement, is it a known issue?

I have a CTEK charger - not sure what model though. Anyway it's not fully charging so looks like I will need a new battery soonish.

Leaking water pumps are a known issue in Mk6 and 7 Golfs. Was told coolant loss was due to air bubbles in the system. Topped up and pressure tested. All ok, I hope...
