R36 chrome delamination on DSG gear shift

I have an 07/2010 R36 which I bought a few months ago. Great car really happy with it. However the chrome from the top of the gear shift release button has commenced to delaminate. When you push the button in you can feel the sharp edge from the chrome. It is out of warranty and I got a price from the dealers and they only sell the entire shift/cover plate which is $780 just for the part. I only need a new button but it is all spring loaded and could be difficult to remove and take to a place to re-chrome . I see that you can buy some B7 leather gear shifts in left hand drive from O/S for under $200. I was thinking of adapting one of these with my right hand drive chrome surround, but was unsure if the B7 shift would integrate into the B6 gear stalk. Has anyone had this problem and any possible solutions. I looked through a large number of pages and could not find a similar thread.

Been trying and they don't have any. The wreckers have tried to source it as well. Any suggestions where to check.

I had the same issue and got it replaced under (extended) warranty after a bit of negotiation with the provider.

I was told the same thing several months ago and was quoted $600. Haven't done anything about it since, but would like to get it fixed (at a reasonable price)

According to Google images - the R36 uses the exact same shift knob as the Mk5 GTI (same era so makes sense).

So you could find someone wrecking a Mk5 GTI with DSG and replace the gear knob.......or you could use this opportunity to buy a brand new OEM gear knob from Bold Sport - they have the Mk6 Golf R one as well. Much cheaper than what you have been quoted.
