Contemplating on what to get. Can someone help a little bit. We need a wagon version.
On one hand new Passat B8 is great looking car but at least about 6-8 months away for Australia if not more.
On the positive side - nice looking vehicle, however it's the first generation of B8 (possible faults as someone mentioned it to me) and price tag is unknown but most likely to be close to 50k maybe even more (looking at Carsales for 2015 current Passat range).
On the other hand current Passat B7. Here is the pickle... Carsales shows the following prices:
2015 Passat MY15 is $47,200 for TSI118 and $53,270 for TDI130 (I would assume this would be the prices for Passat B
However,
2014 Passat MY15 is $39,690 for TSI118 and $45,690 for TDI130
Question 1: what is the difference in standard inclusions between 2015 and 2014 versions to warrant $7,500 price difference?
Other option would be getting 1-2 year old Passat for $10,000 less that run-out stock with about 40k on it. For example,
2013 Passat MY13.5 is $29,888 for TSI118 with almost 40k on it
2013 Passat MY13.5 is $32,880 for TDI130 with 46k on it.
BUT... it shows as "Excluding Government Charges" which amounts to about $1,500...
Question 2: Is it possible to negotiate down the price of second hand Passat to include "Government Charges" in the price above? Is it worth getting second-hand or demo car or better off sticking with the brand new?
As you understand it's very substantial price difference between 2015 and 2013 car (about $17,000-20,000 gap) ) hence why I'm asking.
Thanks

My preference is to find a V6 then a TDI. I find the tsi 118 underpowered especially from start and it has a lag, at least on the rental Passat cars I've driven. Our 3.6 l V6 is fine with 7-8 l/100km on the highway and 11+ to 15 in the city depending on traffic. The TDI would be more economical if you are doing a lot of driving. See if you can find a new B7 now and negotiate the price. They will want a sale before the end of June as it affect their quota for the new model.

Historically we tend to miss out on the top oilers, though Audi A6 is hope things are changing. With VW we are always second class on the RHD orders to the UK, so the interesting models are always slow to arrive
How long will you keep it?
If a short (less than 5) the depreciation will be so much less on the 8 because it will be in the same model cycle (just updated)
With the B7 it would be worth talking to the dealer clearly saying the car is superceeded and on run out...
If it was a $10k price swing the depreciation will not catch up in 3 years, and if it is much over 5 no car is worth anything these days
i just locked in a demo model, 2015 130TDI B7 Limited Edition Wagon, 2000kms, 8mths Reg for $42.5k yesterday if that helps.

Answer 1: If they are both MY15s they are probably identical, but the 2014 build date makes it an old car, that they want to sell before EOFY.
Answer 2: An MY13.5 with 40K - you would be looking to pay 60% of original price I'd guess (40K is more than two years worth of kilometres for the average driver - closer to 3). So I would hope to pay more like 24K for the TSI and 27K for the TDI.
Second hand versus brand new... what's the maximum post length
Here's one way to look at it - a new car sold today will probably give you at least 200K of relatively trouble free motoring. At 15K/year that is 13.5 years. Of course, with care they can last much longer. With abuse they may not even last that long.
When you buy a second hand car in the 2-3 year old category you will typically be paying about 60-70% of price (depending on make/model/condition etc). So the first owner has used 20% of the car's life but paid 30-40% of the price. So on that sort of comparision you would seem to be ahead buying the 2-3 year old car. However, it isn't necessarily that clear cut - did the previous owner abuse the car (or did they abuse it more than you would have). How much warranty is left etc. Also - all the expensive services happen after 40K (DSG Service at 60K, timing belt at 100K, DSG (again) at 120K etc).
Overall I think you are still well ahead on the 2-3 year old car. I think cars between 2-5 years old tend to sell at a discount to their actual "value" because the well off like having a new car every few years - they can salary package it making it tax effective etc.
Having a new car is nice - have had 5 in my time (and turned them over every 5 years). Now I am pursuing a craddle to grave strategy on the current pair. Beyond that, I'm not going to buy another new one - like it's nice and all, but I'm over and would prefer to have the 15K to put towards kids uni fund or some such.
