Question Mk6 wheel issues - resolved

    Hi all,

Have just fitted a Mk 6 steering wheel to the 2009 R36.

Error code 01426 - controls in steering wheel (E221) 004 - no signal communication.

I have the AJ SWCM which I thought should be late enough.

Is there a specific coding to do for the 12 button wheel?

I have VCDS and it’s currently connected!

    Thanks,

    Mike.

Check out this to see the supported LIN versions.

And this post from our Kamold on the VCDS forum

I think your current SWCM won't support the LIN 2 needed for the 12-button wheel; check your coding for any mention of it.

    Thanks for the response,

I did Check the Ross Tech site and the SWCM and it looks as though it should work?

    3C0-953-549-AJ SW 0030 Highline 2.0 Lin

There were some notes on Ross Tech re turning off the Lin 1.3, but couldn’t work out exactly where to make the changes.
Maybe it needs to be turned on, as currently 2.0, but that would be going backwards?

The following from the Ross Tech forums:

“From my experience, almost every 5K0 steering wheel ECU wich supports MFSW via LIN2.0 also supports LIN 1.3.
i have tried a few and every one worked properly.

Have to tick byte 0, bit 7 to turn on LIN1.3”

Maybe Julian can chime in or someone in Melbourne can do it for me?
Can pay in beer or cash......

Yep AJ supports both LIN 1.3 and LIN 2.0.
You just need to change your coding correctly to match.

    From the label file:

    C10,0xxx?xx: Multi-Function Steering Wheel (1-4 = LIN 1.3 / 5-8 = LIN 2.0)
    C11,0 = Multi-Function Steering Wheel not installed
    C12,1 OR 5 = Multi-Function Steering Wheel w/o Tiptronic and w/o Push-To-Talk (PTT) installed
C13,2 OR 6 = Multi-Function Steering Wheel with Tiptronic and no Push-To-Talk (PTT) installed
    C14,3 OR 7 = Multi-Function Steering Wheel w/o Tiptronic and with Push-To-Talk (PTT) installed
C15,4 OR 8 = Multi-Function Steering Wheel with Tiptronic and with Push-To-Talk (PTT) installed

So you want the 3rd from last digit to be 6 or 8 depending how you want the mic button to work (either mute - 6, or voice control - 8 ).

    Thanks a heap Julian.

I’m hanging to plug it all back in and try but will have to hold out a couple of days. I’m on a timeline for a work contract that’s just about to expire, so no time for anything else til Saturday.

We bought my missus a new Caddy in 2010 (hence the user name) and I fitted a Mk6 wheel, RNS510, Kufatec Bluetooth (yeah I know.....) and the W8 interior light with microphone locations, as all the UK guys were doing at the time.
I replaced the SWCM with an AH and coded and all has been well for years.
You may have even responded on these forums way back when I did the Caddy swap.

If I get the wheel working in the R36 I’ll start looking into what’s next - already has the Discovery Media unity fitted. Probably a replacement reverse camera. Don’t think I’m game to go as far as you have!

There are a few in there ending with AJ, missed that one

Wheel all sorted. Simple change in the end. Steering Wheel Coding just needs to change from 0001212 to 0001812. The ‘8’ is the Lin 2.0 command compared to the ‘2’ being for the older Lin 1.3 I’m guessing.
    No other changes required.
So, anyone else changing the wheel just needs to make this simple change. Other that that it’s plug and play, as long as your SWCM meets requirements for Lin2.0.

Next is to work on the reverse camera. I did buy a cheap converter to use the original camera but there’s mixed results with these. Thought I’d try before pulling the car apart but maybe better to do it right once.
I see Julian used a Tiguan camera module to keep the lines. Guessing he changes the camera and everything else as well. The whole kit is around $1K so would need to be sure it works!

I have a cheaper solution to the Tiguan \ Sharan module.

Big improvement. I feel it updates the interior quite a bit.
