Disc brake calliper rewind tool needed?

There's a thread in the Golf Mk5 & Jetta section discussing the use of a disc brake calliper rewind tool when changing the rear brake pads.

Which tool needed for rear caliper piston retraction?

Does anyone know if this is necessary or helpful when changing the rear pads on a B6 Passat?

Do you have an electric handbrake on that? That requires VCDS.

Yes. I have EPB and access to VCDS.
