Probably battery as it has to turn it over at more than 270RPM to make it fire mY battery checked out Ok just before it checked out for good
My 2008 Passat TDI have issues to start lately. It cranks for over 5 seconds before getting engine started. Problem appears once a while (roughly a week) and quite randomly but all occasions so far are for cold cranking in the morning. The battery was checked and found no problem. No fault code comes up in VCDS. Any idea what may go wrong?

Perhaps the fuel pump. I had a 2004 tdi. The fuel pump had a small leak so if it had been off for a longer time, as in overnight, it took 5 or 10 seconds for it to start. Never had issue starting during the day if I had been driving it just when it was off for awhile.

I second the battery. Also make sure the fuel filter has been changed recently.
You can also attempt to use the Liqui Moly diesel Injector cleaner fluid if you are handy and a DIY person.
Lastly have you thought about cleaning the tank, I have been thinking of having mine done/doing it myself a few times- Its an 11yr old diesel tank probably filled with crud lol, only thing holding me back is where I can responsibly dispose of the stuff and time.
