B7 high line camera adapter for aftermarket head unit

    Evening all,

Have spent hours looking at the various posts, so apologies if this is duplicated. I have a 2014 high line with factory audio and an aftermarket sub, and optical sensors and auto park. My RNS510 unit is slowly failing - first the startup screen shifted left about 5 years ago, then a couple of years ago the colours all changed. Over the last 3 months it’s been booting slowly or not at all - sometimes it works straight away, sometimes kicks in after a hour or so and then sometimes not at all - just gets stuck in boot screen, logo then reboots.

Looking at replacement options. I’ve seen the upgrade thread to latest VW but that’s pushing the budget and can’t spend the time to sort it. Looking at an aftermarket head unit plus surround plus cables for around 800-1000 for pioneer or alpine with wireless apple CarPlay.

I’ve seen both alpine and pioneer make an adapter to the high camera (ie the one with the turning reversing guides) but these are about 250-300.

I don’t really care about this turning functionality. Can I get an adapter (or solder / connect) to hook the current cam up to the new unit much cheaper without needing this adapter? Or am I better off running wires to a new aftermarket cam? Only other info is that occasionally the current camera has all horizontal lines and image flicker - appears to be intermittent - would this be a sign that maybe the current cam and wiring is needing to be replaced anyway?

Appreciate any replies. Once I solve this one I might have a crack at the rear wiper water spray - which is low if any pressure and seems to correlate with drips from the drivers seatbelt area - suspect this hose leaks…

    Tom

The, I have the alpine highline camera interface, and the picture quality is crap. Just get an aftermarket one with the bend lines off aliexpress.
Worst part would be running cable to the rear. But you need to take the trim off to get at the drain hose anyway...

The trim is pretty easy to do, but that might be the fact I have installed and removed it so many times now

The best option for the money would be to get an Aliexpress camera with the dynamic lines built in; I paid about $150 for mine before I replaced it with the OEM unit.

The RCD330 is cheap for an OEM-style install but still needs the CVBS camera.

Thanks - looked at AliEx last night. They've got the badge ones which open for around $140 or so, then the ones which are compatible with the existing one for around $180. Mine is a wagon so goes above the number plate - they appear to be around $30 or so - any chance you can recommend a seller / model so I can make sure I get the right one?

I got mine from this store, but the original listing is now gone.

HIRIOT Official Store - Amazing prodcuts with exclusive discounts on AliExpress

Plenty of ones around, go for the can bus dynamic lines if you want the Highline feel.

The issue is not the camera itself, it is the box between the camera and the head unit.

The OEM camera output is actually standard (with a German plug not RCA) but the signals are converted at the steering angle box thingy and converted to different wiring before heading up the front.

New cameras do have better resolution though. And fitting them into the factory housing is actually quite easy.

The most annoying part with a aftermarket head unit is running the camera wire from the hatch / boot to the front (especially wagon via the grommet in the hatch) and then running the aftermarket microphone as the factory one can not be used.
