B6 3C Headlight problem

I replaced the standard Halogen low beam bulbs in my 2006 Passat with a HiD H7 upgrade kit. The kit is CAN ready and the lights work perfectly, with no CAN related headlight failure warnings.

Except...

When I turn to high beam, instead of the low beams staying on, like they did with Halogen bulbs, the low beam flickers crazily for about 5 seconds, then go out. The low beams don't go out synchronised; one will fail and then a second or so later, the other one. Failures are accompanied by headlight failure messages on the MFD.

When I return to low beam, I have no lights. This is good for a heart starter, let me tell you. I have to switch the headlight switch to Off, then back to Auto or On for the low beams to return.

Any ideas?

Firstly, thanks for the unsolicited legal advice, and secondly, I haven't tried putting the originals back in. I'll do that during the week when I get a chance.
