Greetings everyone. Haven't posted much at all but here's a project I've been working on very slowly for about a year now.
B6 AFS projector swap. I'm very familiar with kamold's projector retrofit (which got me on the path to do this in the first place) but much to my surprise, when I finally got these awful things open I found mine were completely different. And just like everything else I've done on this car I'm learning as I go. Having said that, these are the earlier AFS headlights which (to be completely honest) are total ****e in my opinion. Aside from the typical projector bowl burnout these things have some other issues that annoy me to no end like sloppy AFS pivot bushings that cause the projectors to vibrate, crappy seals that cause leaks etc.
Anyways, a lot of cutting, grinding, filing, fitting and re-fitting dozens of times to get to this point.
Final rough in is done. This headlight is mechanically and electrically 100% functional. Tested it in the car to make sure no warning lights, ran tests and diagnostics via VCDS and all is good.
Morimoto D2S 5.0 projectors
Morimoto retro-quick adapters (these are cut to fit)
Morimoto D1S to D2S igniters
Cheapo China bulbs (globes) for testing
There's a fair amount of cutting required to both the AFS frame and the actual mounting flange of the projector itself. I tried a few different projectors (I got fed up looking) but these have the smallest bowls I could find for a 3" projector, plus they have the retro-quick adapters made specifically for them. The retro-quick's are a "modify to fit your junk" application so there is a lot of fussing about to get them right, but they work 👍
I wish I'd have taken side by side pictures of the headlights on in my garage to show the difference, but I will mention even with the cheapo chinesium $20 bulbs er... globes I mean, the light output blows away the other side that has stock Valeo projector with Osram CBI D1S globe.
I'll update this as I slowly get around to finishing these off.
Cheers! 🇨🇦
Nice work! Always good to see people trying something for the first time.
Yeah it looks totally different to the newer version. A lot more room to move in there without the cornering light.
I'm sure you'll appreciate your hard work once you get to drive with them at night.
