Mamba Ebike to replace Tiguan
I've got a 08 r36 with 224k on the clock. Still going strong, it's quicker then my mates 09 36 and his car has a tune and only 120k on the clock (not sure what's going on there....)
Timing chain and Dsg is possibly the main worry. Timing chain is about 2.5k to repair and Dsg well if you hunt around you can find cheap replacements. I picked up a low km one for 1k, clutches can wear which it did so on my CC which has 210k and usually cost $600-700 plus labour.
However I see where you are coming from I was once a uni student and drove a twin turbo 3000gt the time, didn't care about costs or maintenance just wanted the car which was expensive to run and costly to maintain lol. The r36 is a awesome car but I don't daily it, it's the weekender I use a diesel CC during the week as I do 35-40k of driving a year. However with something like a diesel CC you get twice the mileage per a tank and diesel is cheaper per a litre then 98 octane per a litre. Consider a tuned diesel and you'll be left with more cash in your account, the CC tuned is quicker then a MK6 GTI with a stage 1 tune. I've compared with friends cars
Also to add, I do the servicing on the cars my self, by oil in bulk ect, if you can do certain things your self then your running costs will be much lower compared to taking it to a shop...

If I was in your situation with 20K to spend I'd be looking at a Toyota 86. Nice to drive, economical, reliable and P plate friendly. Plenty to chose around that price point and good resale to boot. I owned a Honda Integra Type R for 14 years (bought it new) and it was fantastic. It was reliable and economical to run as well as being a great track car.
Good luck in your search.

I would agree with kamold. I bought my r36 from a uni student who copped dsg and power steering after maxing out purchasing the car. I have always kept 5k spare with the car as sometimes things just happen and I do all the work on cars myself. That being said if u get a clutch or timing belt issue in any car it is always worthwhile keeping at least 2k spare. My 2 cents anyway

Great cars, but many are starting to get on a bit in age, meaning all sorts of potentially expensive problems are showing up.
Timing chains, DSG failures, water pumps, front crank seals, Haldex pump failures, among others. Every 60K, you're looking at circa $1,000 for the major service. Brakes aren't particularly cheap either, especially if you're not content with fitting any old junk.

Just like most of their owners
If I had been able to afford a comparable car when I was a student (no idea what that would have been...maybe an E30 325i??) I would probably have bought it and worked nights in all sorts of jobs to keep it on the road...
But as I was a poor student I had to make do with my MK2 Escort 1.6.
86 is a great suggestion.
Or if you are looking for more of a cruiser then maybe a mazda6 or a Liberty although the GTs are probably all pretty flogged out by now...
If you love something you'll find a way.
You'll always find good advice here but that don't pay for parts....
