Wax vs Polish - The Difference

Light scratches are more than likely from washing the car, unavoidalble if you want a clean car.

You have a few options, not worry about them, machine polish the car (or get a pro detailer to), use a glaze that will fill and conceal the scratches for a few months.

I'd prefer to give the car a decent cut to remove the scratches completely. Then give it a good glaze afterwards.

Question - I've got a dark grey car. I have Menzerna polishing stuff with a dual action polisher:

FG500 - Fast gloss Cutting Compound
PF2500 - Power finish Light Cutting Compound
SF4000 - Super finish Fine Finishing Polish
SWProtect - Protective Paint Sealant

1. Should I use the SWProtect given the Duragloss below? If so, at what stage?

and Duragloss:
601 Polish bonding agent
105 Total performance polish
921 Fast clean & shine

2. Is there any point waxing over that or is it conflicting with the DuraGloss (because that's more a sealant isn't it?) ?

Generally I want durability rather than outright shine (that needs to be applied more often). So I'm thinking a sealant system, but maybe put on a wax if I want to give it a super sparkle occasionally. I'm just not sure if that's technically/chemically possible.

Bit later - after a bit of Googling seems you can wax over a sealant, but leave the sealant to 'cure' for a couple of days first. More of benefit for darker cars.

For wax over sealant, you can but really there no huge benefit in looks. You will make a darker colour darker, but how much better it will look is much of a muchness. Durability it wont extend the life of the sealant really as the sealant outdoes a natural carnauba wax anyhow.

It's just you mention it on page 4 of this thread with no conditions (time limit) so people reading through may think it still applies.

Yes, I missed it (free ship over $150 Queenie special) by a few days. Might have got a lance and polisher too with the extras you offered then.

I wasn't thinking the wax would give more protection (well, any more than the sealant is going to give) just purtyness for when I get a bit OCD about it all


Still interested to know if I should be using the Menzerna SWProtect at the end of polishing (before doing the Duragloss sealing) or is the Duragloss 601 just going to take it off anyway? Jeez, maybe I shouldn't have bothered with any of the Duragloss stuff.

Ok, for the record. Did the DuraGloss and look, it's ok, but not speccy. Then I put on Ion Coat Naviwax Dark (yes, I have been buying from the competition, because no one dealer has all I was after in stock). First, it goes on really easily - not sure if that was because of the Duragloss, or just would have anyway, I dunno, but I was able to apply to the whole car very quickly and it did shine up very nicely. Also didn't use much wax at all.

I'd say worth doing and easy enough to do once a month. Whole car is looking pretty good, except for the paint chips. Tried my best to treat them with a genuine paint chip kit (paint and clear coat), but it's the hardest part of the whole process.

Apologies for the late reply! Its a very easy wax to put on definitely! You dont really need it to be honest if you already have a sealant as it will not last as long as your sealant. Looks wise you should get a tad more, maybe But looks great!

I just got back from the panel beater after my other car was repaired(non vw). Was chatting to the guy about wax and polish. He swore by Mr Sheen as a replacement for wax!?! I have never ever heard of this before.

He said he's been using it on his show car as well as Harley for 20+ years!

I wouldnt recommend it! Each to their own but makes you wonder why no detailer uses it? lol

Get something that'll last 6/7 months+ like duragloss, zaino, wolfs chemicals, nanolex etc.
