    Spraying metallic at home?

    I've done a lot of painting at home before (2 mk1's and various bits) but always in spray enamel.

    now i have a new project to work on (my missus's new car) that needs a bit of paint here and there.... and the colour is...

    LA5Y - helios blue!

    i've never painted metallic before so wondering if anyone has experience and could offer me some advice.

    I've never sprayed metallic before, and I'm only an amature at best.

    but when I spoke to a pro at the paint shop, and ex painter himself, on the topic of acrylic metallic, he said something along the lines of. paint it like you normally would, (acted out 3 simultaneous coats) and then wait till it dries (15-20 mins) and hit it with clear coat, cut and buff the clear when it's ready. if you get a run with the colour coat, stop immediately, wait for it to dry, rub it back, and then start spraying again. He said you didn't need to worry about cross hatching and etc. i've yet to try it myself.

    he said it was alot like spraying regular solid colour. (basically)

    I think your biggest problem would be blending in the metallic's between factory, and repsrayed bits.

    Do your prep sanding down to 800# or finer,

    You can apply the base after each coat flashes off, but more time in between is ok.

    watch out for runs in the primer, you will need to sand them out to the same degreeof prep or they will show thru on the base coat/clear.

    Found it really difficult to match the colour if your only doing patches, even different gun airpressure can make the colour change !! Best doing the whole car if you want it to look good.
    Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...

    If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??

    If there are mettalic flakes in the mix, make sure you swirl the pot often, gravity or suction feed. As the others have said above, it'll be harder to match if the consistency is not the same.
