What area, and what insurance company?
I deal with a couple suncorp group (aami etc) approved workshops in the Eastern Suburbs

Inner city, RACV, but they have said I can choose repairer.

Most shops I work with are further out (Springvale, Glen Waverley, Oakleigh etc), so they might not be much good to you.

My uncle had his brand new R painted by racv's recommended repairer in Essendon (I forget the name, but will try to find it) and they did a perfect job on it.
He had a truck drop a heap of rocks on it on the drive home from the VW dealer. Hadn't even owned the car an hour!

No chance in my opinion. 2 new door shells (front maybe just a skin, bit hard to see) and depending on the repairer, either a repair or possibly a new section on the bottom of the quarter. Possibly a repair on the hinge pillar, and a new wheel & tyre (though I've heard stories of insurance companies paying out the wheel damage and leaving you to source your own). You'll end up with the whole side painted
Pricing isn't my strong point, but probably around $10k. Not even close to a write-off on an R
I wouldn't be surprised if you had to wait weeks for parts from overseas either

You will need a lot to write off the car to be honest.
I know you dont want to drive around with a car you know thats been in an accident and its pretty ****ty.

Hi,
Someone rear ended my GTI in Melbourne today

Some panel damage to the rear obviously but also a suspicious feel in the steering that I'd like checked out.

I've been rear ended before and left to pay for alignment trouble long after the cosmetics were dealt with through insurance.

The guy at Woods didn't want to discuss anything other than the panels, insisted my tyres were to blame.

Any suggestions for how to get the assessor to check out potential wheel and frame damage before agreeing to a repair?

^ Which insurance company are you with, or more so which insurance company is the at fault party with?

If you can get details of their insurance company and a claim number that they 'may' have submitted to their insurance company, you should be able to go to your preferred workshop and get them to check all the damages including structual. This is the easiest and most convenience way for you giving that you are not at fault and have their claim details. The ball is in your court and you have much more pulling power, and usually the workshop will do all the pulling for you as they have the experience.

If in the scenerio that you need to go through your insurance company and you make a claim (even though you're not at fault), you'll need to jump through some hurdles depending who your insurance company is. E.g. AAMI will insist on their preferred workshops, which will be cheaper for them and you'll struggle to get a result you're after. Lots will be overlooked, unless you fight for it. If you're with Allianz or RACV then you should be able to take it to your choice of repairer.

Without much more information you have provided us, to answer your last question, you need to insist that the workshop checks structual damage and report this to the assessor. Else, this could be overlooked. Ensure that you get a job quote so you can see for yourself what has been picked up and what parts and repairs are on the list, and then go from there.
