Powdercoating stock rims

Has anyone done this? Anyone have a rough idea of costs etc.? Recommended places?

I am interested in powdercoating my stock rims, car is a candy white GTI, I think something dark would look good, with a matte finish.

Thoughts?

Dark, but not black IMO.

I know a guy in Artarmon who can powder coat, but he is a metal worker, so the rims would have to be prepped, without tyres, etc.

probably better just to get them painted, you curb a powder coated rim you have to strip the whole wheel back and re coat it to fix it, curb a painted rim you can just fix that area, plus getting it painted will be cheaper

Id say go for powdercoating over painting. Powdercoat is pretty durable.
Normally looking around $25 a wheel, but will also need to get them stripped before hand (sand blast or dipped) so add another $15-20 a wheel.

Plasti Dip?

I've considered plasti-dip, but powdercoating would look a bit more professional. I know plasti-dip lasts a while but I've heard it turns brown after a while so you would need to re-do it again eventually. The main benefit to plasti-dip is it can be easily removed...

Do normal wheel and tyre places offer powdercoating? I'm in Western Sydney - if anyone knows of any places they would recommend that would be great!

As for colour, I was thinking matte black, or gunmetal grey. Definitely do not want a gloss finish. Thoughts?

matte black makes the wheels look constantly dirty, and disgusting. Matte grey might be alright, but it'd be a biatch to keep clean.

Really? I find the current stock rims a bitch to keep clean. The gloss finish attracts dust too easily and too quickly after washing.

You need to remember to get the wheels prepped really well if you want a nice finish. If it isn't perfect the powder coating won't stick or will finish poorly. I recommend that you get the wheels soda blasted (there's a place at Taren Point), it leaves the metal looking like when it came out of the foundry.

Also if you are powder coating wheels you should remember to cover the wheel nut area with some masking tape before powder coating for safety. You don't want to lose wheel due to the the powder coating cracking when you've tightened the wheel nuts, it then falling away, leaving your wheel nuts free wheeling.

As for where to get the powder coating done, get the yellow pages out, you'll find that cost to get them done will vary a bit.
