Hail damage on roof. Options? Putty then Wrap?

    Hi all,

I just picked up an 04/11 6R polo whose roof would make a golf ball look flat . It has quite a lot of hail damage on it (well I think its a lot anyway) and while I am going to get a dint removalist to have a look and see what he thinks but I suspect it will be a lost cause for him, or at least an expensive one.

Are there any other options available?

One thing I was thinking of investigating, while I know its probably not the 'proper' way to fix it but will do while i save up to have the roof re-skinned, is getting the roof puttied up so its flat and getting a wrap put over it, something like a black or even a carbon fibre pattern (car is Pepper Grey). I saw one that has a black wrap on it recently (car was red) and it actually looked pretty good.

Is that an option i could consider to reduce its adverse visual appearance without breaking the bank, or is it not feasible and just down right dodgy? I intend to keep the car mind you, its not to hide anything.

TIA. Apologies for the naive question, but painting and such like is not my strong suit.

    Hey mate!
I myself bought a car (95' VR6) with hail damage, but on the bonnet.
I needed a cheap way out as i didn't have much cash.
I used the method your saying, i bought some lightweight body filler from Supercheap Auto, and some Carbon Fibre Vinyl Wrap from eBay.
Simply grinded the bonnet with an electric sander using 120grit, then simply applying the Body Filler to all the dents!
Then just spent some time sanding it all off and making it all flat and one smooth surface.
Then I just simply covered it with Carbon Fibre Vinyl Wrap!
I know it might be frowned upon by some Dubbers, but the Carbon Fibre Vinyl Wrap is a cheap way to cover those dents, depending where they are!
So to answer your question, if you don't want to take your car to a Panel Shop, and don't want to break your bank!
Just buy some Body Filler - $10, some sandpaper - $Few Dollars, and some Carbon Fibre Vinyl Wrap from eBay - $50 for 1.5mx1.5m.

    Good luck with the dents

Thanks for that. I spoke to a wrapping place yesterday actually and explained what i wanted to do, but they indicated that the wrap does not stick to body filler, just paint... so im not sure if there are different fillers or wraps on the market that may be better at this but i i will actaully try and take a photo of the roof so you can see how many there are.... they're is quite a lot...

It stuck very well mate once you sand back the body filler after you've filled the dents, it will allow for better adhesion!
Yeah just put up a photo, I had about 15-20 dents and one was about 7cm in diameter
