Best way to clean exhaust tips

    Hi,

I have a MKV GT Sport TDI.

I manage to keep the paint etc clean but the pipe tips are still dirty.

I'm after any advice on how to clean them.

    thanks

if they're metal and not painted chrome or anything, just clean then with some soap, water and a cloth or something, and then use some metal polish

To properly clean and prep exhaust tips you will need

Steel wool - The finer the better. use 0000 if you can find it
Acid based wheel cleaner - Hydrochloric (Autlglym Clean Wheels) or Oxalic (Mothers) works fine
    An old cloth
    Metal polish - Autosol Paste

    1. Wash the tips using an old bit of sponge and soap
    2. Split your steel wool into at least 2 bits
    3. spray some wheel cleaner into the tips and let it sit for a min or so
    4. Wearing gloves, use the steel wool to agitate and clean the inside of the tips. If the outside isnt highly polished/chrome then you can also clean the exterior with the acid and steel wool.
    5. rinse out the acid
    6. Polish with the steel wool and some Autosol.
    7. Polish with a cloth and some Autosol to finish it up and get it nice and shiny.

If you exhaust exterior is highly polished/chrome then just use Autosol on a cloth untill it all comes off. If its very bad then you could spray some wheel cleaner onto a cloth and wipe it round first but dont use steel wool.

As usual all products are available from www.carcareproducts.com.au (dont forget your discount code!)

I haven't polished mine but found the mag wheel cleaner works an absolute treat in cutting through the carbon. Didn't even use steel wool and it all came away, although I suppose that depends on how long it's been and how much build up there is.
