DAY OF THE VW 2014 - THE 60TH CLUB CELEBRATION
On this page I just want to outline some changes for this year's Day of the Volkswagen for those of you who know the event well, and to provide information for first time attendees.
This is our premier event for the year and it has grown year by year over the last several years. It is also the Club's only major fund raising endeavor, and the money raised allows us to support charities and to subsidize Club organised activities. We aim to give attendees value for money on the day, and the profits come back to members in many ways.
Because this is a special year for the Club, it will be a two day event. On the Saturday, a cavalcade of 60 VWs will travel over the Bolte and Westgate bridges to assemble at Williamstown, where these and other cars will be displayed, together with interesting VW memorabilia and artifacts. If you have a vehicle you would like considered for the cavalcade, or material which could be part of the historical display, please contact John Goodison at
technical@vwclub.com.au re the cavalcade or Andrew Ermel at
chplates@vwclub.com.au re historical material. There will be vendors at Williamstown, so you will be able to enjoy lunch as you wander around the cars and exhibits. At the time of writing we have the numbers for cars up to 1982, so we are particularly looking for vehicles dated post 1982.
As there has been a significant response from members re the cavalcade, we are planning a second cavalcade to depart from another location, so do contact John Goodison to offer your vehicle. Participants in both Cavalcades will be presented with a specially struck badge - a collectors' item - together with the 2014 Day of the Volkswagen DVD.
The Sunday will comprise the usual DoVW activities, with some additions and some organisational changes. We have been able to streamline the entry gate over the last couple of years, thanks to Andrew Ermel, and this year there will be just one gate for General Entry. This includes walk-in patrons who wish to park outside the venue as well as VWs which simply wish to drive in ($20 per car which includes two people) and those entering their cars for judging ($25 per car which also includes two people). As you know there are specialist groups who attend each year, such as Synchros, Lufters, etc, who like to park as groups. They are to be offered prepaid tickets for entry through the top gate as groups. For more information, contact Andrew Ermel at
chplates@vwclub.com.au. Please note there will be no pre-registration for individuals as we have done in previous years.
We are aiming to boost trader and swap activities this year. The good news is that swap sites will be only $25 which includes two people. We are organising different children's activities this year and there will be lots of vendors for food and drinks.
Of course, the highlight of the day will be the drawing of the raffle of our Club project Beetle. This will take place at 2pm. So please bring your tickets with you. We are hoping the car will be won by someone attending on the day.
As the Day of the Volkswagen is moving with the times, we are responding to requests last year for more precise categories for water cooled cars. The organising committee has addressed this issue by re-jigging the categories. Accordingly, there will be two teams of judges, one judging air-cooled and the other water-cooled. These teams will judge both standard and modified. There will be an entry lane for all air-cooled and another for all water-cooled vehicles. As has happened in recent years, trophies will be presented in front of the grandstand, with a drive past of the winning cars.
If you are able to volunteer to assist on the day, please contact Matt Reynolds at
events@vwclub.com.au
I'm looking forward to enjoying the weekend with you all. Bring all your VW friends!
