2009 Passat CC 2.0L TDI 6spd DSG. Had timing belt, tensioner, water pump all renewed (preventative maintenance) by a VW workshop and new G13 coolant in the system. All good, no prob's at all until a couple of weeks later - just slowly driving along quiet side street (glad it wasn't freeway!) and the vehicle suddenly went dead - there was a momentary flash of the battery warning light! Pushed car to the side - opened hood - no smells or anything that looked out of place; started car again - cranks no problem at all but engine doesn't fire/start. So, electrics all fine. Call RACV - RACV tech reckons timing belt LIKELY came off or has snapped and we all know what that means!
Vehicle towed to same VW mechanic that changed the timing belt. They found no prob's with timing belt, took them several hours but they said it looked like soot/debris in EGR and throttle body likely caused the problem. They cleaned it up and car now going well - pick-up tomorrow hopefully unless they find something else. Didn't think this issue would cause the car to completely come to a halt (maybe just bad idling/poor running)?! Anyway, hopefully pick-up car tomorrow!
I bypassed the EGR on a different vehicle and was wondering if I could do the same on the Passat CC 2.0L TDI without much bother? Anyone know a kit I could use? Easy to do? Any prob's pitfalls?

Yeah, prefer to do the right thing re the environment if I can - partner used to work for the EPA. Obviously in the UK it's an issue with MOT (think you heve to renew on a regular basis), but the EGR and DPF seem to cause a lot of pain (and I know how expensive it is to get a new DPR!). Don't think the DPR can be by-passed easily! I assume if the EGR was bypassed or blanked off you would need to get a remapping of the ECU to stop the engine warning light coming up?

Just seen this on EGR Removal / Delete
"The EGR Valve should NOT be removed on vehicles that still have the DPF Filter in place, doing so may block the DPF as the EGR Valve operation is a prerequisite for DPF Regeneration". Looks like I'd have to remove the DPF as well then - not sure how feasible/easy that would be? Couldn't find anything on the Wolfsburg site for the 2009 Passat CC 2.0L TDI - left them an email and see what they say. Maybe I just have to live with the EGR (and the DPF)?
You are jumping to a lot of conclusions with no proof. Given the circumstances run it for a while, they may have found the problem (their fault) and be blowing smoke in your face trying to blame it on something else that may just be plausible and you will accept. Or they may not have found the problem at all of course and it will stop again. If it does then it was not what they diagnosed and they had better have another go.
Okay, all good again - EGR and throttle valve removed and carbon/soot physically removed; throttle valve had in fact suddenly stuck shut - no indications prior regards, running (idle and power) - just a sudden thing - no air to the engine I guess! Filled up the tank with diesel and a tin of Liqui Moly Fuel System Conditioner to help a bit; will also go for some long drives. Down the track I might try the Liqui Moly Diesel Engine Intake Decarb (sprays an atomised mist into the air intake whilst engine running) - has anyone successfully used this product?

Still going well! Suspect it will of course "gunk up" again over time and there will again be a risk of the engine suddenly going dead due to no air, so does anyone know of an online guide to removing and cleaning the EGR valve and anti-shudder valve ("throttle valve") on a 2.0L TDI engine?
Been a little while now, all running well. Will likely need to schedule a time so I can remove the EGR and ASV myself and give them a good clean lest they get blocked-up again and I come to a sudden halt when I least expect it!
Anyone know of a good tutorial on how to do this so I don't make any silly mistakes?
