Headlining - What Next?

2009 Passat CC 2.0TDI

The headlining has started to fall down! I'm assuming over time that the foam/adhesive behind the fabric has started to degrade!

Has anyone tackled this themselves? Any tips, tools, materials or guides to refer to???

Otherwise, does anyone know of somewhere in Melbourne where there is someone who can do a decent job at a decent price - I'm in inner Melbourne, but will travel to someone who can do a good job. Don't want something over the top, just a half-decent repair.

[On another vehicle I once had repaired at a Smash Repairs shop that shall remain unnamed, they totally messed up what was a perfectly good headlining (the roof had hail damage) - they admitted they messed it up - full of ripples!]

I also used these guys but it was over 5 years ago (in Sydney too).

Did an excellent job on my mk5. Material was a perfect match and it's still holding up well.

Tried Repair Bull - not currently servicing my area of Melbourne, but hope to in the future!?

Received a written quote from a large Motor Trimmer in the northern suburbs of Melbourne. They have quoted $1045 which includes new cloth; said it will take 2-3 days. They have to remove the rear window to get the headliner out - need to do this with the Passat CC. They said they also replace all the VW genuine headliner clips.

Seems quite expensive - certainly more than I thought!

Can you take the car to them, or take it to a suburb they do service? Considering how many people have used and recommend Repair Bull (albeit the Sydney branch) id be going with them.

If the rear window has to come out then that's where the extra cost will be coming from. I guess with the shape of the CC's body, it might not be possible to remove the headliner out the doorway. Sounds like this might be your only option.

Thanks LeStig - will ask! In the meantime I used little pig-tail fabric pins that you twist in throught the fabric and into the board - they work a treat!!! The pin head is 10mm clear plastic - I got a box of 30 from aliexpress for $5. Family all very impressed - too many of them would look a little bling though!

I had mine done in canberra for $700
took 5 hours but perfect job and I’ve a sunroof and rear sun curtain
they took the front seats out to help manoeuvre the lining in and out the rear door

Interesting, others have said that you can manoeuvre it out (there is a YouTube video). Don't know how long it takes via the rear windscreen? Two of the motor trimmers said they remove the rear windscreen - less chance of damaging the headlining board seemed to be the reason? Removing a windscreen is a step too far for me - can imagine things going wrong! I wonder how Repair Bull do it - didn't ask them as they don't operate in Melbourne at the moment. The cost of $700 was much less than what I've been quoted! Anyway, for now, the pins are doing great.
