By law you don't need to carry chains if in an AWD car.
I wouldn't use chains either on my car. Suggest you get some autosocks instead. See here:

OK, I have searched the forums and found some older threads but I thought it was a timely time of the year for this topic. I am thinking of taking my AWD V6 Passat CC to the snow. Does anybody know whether chains fit the run flat Conti tyres? Do you need chains at all? I am concerned about the frameless windows sticking. What do I do about those? Anything else? Would love to hear from anyone who have taken their Passats (whether CC or not) to the snow...

Yes, apologies. I checked that the OP was from NSW and assumed he referred to NSW.
Hey Leagle,
How did the ski trip go?
Antman.
Hi Antman good to hear from you. Have been busy so haven't been on the forum for a while. Unfortunately due to work commitments, did not make it to the snow this season. Maybe next year. I like you would be interested to hearing from other AWD Passat / Passat CC owners who have taken their cars to the snow though. BTW its been almost 2 years that I have had the CC and its still running reliably. You?
