Boot - Won't Go Up? 2009 VW Passat CC

Partner closed the boot hard yesterday and there was a sound like something breaking. The boot has to be held open now - spring/s and or gas strut/s must be broken or detached. I'm assuming I'll have to remove the boot side panel trim on both sides to access the mechanism? Has anyone got any tips on this job? Is there a spring on each side and just one gas strut?

Manual boot lid - key fob open (or the control on driver's door) and it goes up quickly; manually close it - so not a powered boot lid. No issue with the lock, just have to lift and HOLD the boot lid up now! Yes, kids and partner slam doors shut - keep trying to explain that's often why things break (sooner) - vibration/shock isn't good for electromechanical parts! Yes, drives me mad!

    Okay removed boot trim.

Spring on LHS hinge (passenger side) broke off (spring hook-end that goes around the spigot on the hinge sheared off); spring on RHS (driver's side) is okay. Spring part number is 3C8 827 665. Any available in Aust/Melb at a reasonable price (couldn't find)?

Boot lid doesn't stay open, obviously the strut (only one strut - on the passenger side) has also failed - it's intact, but offers no resistance at all - boot lid just falls shut! The strut part number is 3C8 827 550. I will get a compatible strut from Run Auto Parts (from Stabilus down in Dingley Village).

One strange thing, there was a black plastic part lying under the hinge (must have also fallen off at some stage) - the part number is 3C8 971 615B - "guide piece for lid hinge (left) rear)"! What's all that about???!!!

Okay, need a spring and a strut, and then work out what's going on with that black plastic part?!

PS Was worth doing because I also removed the now very unreliable fuel flap actuator on the driver's side - pushed the rod to open the flap and then went to fill-up with diesel. Original fuel flap actuator part number was 3C8 810 773 (actuator Made In Italy). Have now removed the fuel flap actuator and will get a Topran unit from Run Auto Parts.

    Any comments/thoughts?

Check some wreckers, not a common failure so parts on a wreck should be ok.
