Thanks.
Boot finished. The passenger side spring had broken - installed a new spring - got a new genuine VW one from EBay (UK). The passenger side strut, the only strut (acts as a damper so the boot doesn't fly open abruptly by virtue of the springs) was also knackered - installed a new Stabilus strut (purchased from Run Auto Parts). Next problem though is the fuel flap actuator - see my other post.
Managed to get a new VW Genuine spring on eBay from the UK - got here in 2 weeks and a fair bit cheaper than VW dealer here (5 weeks delivery from VW dealership) even with freight from UK included.
Replaced broken spring and decided to anchor both springs (spring on each side of boot) at the least tension hole - consequently boot opens nice and smoothly now - doesn't fly open! The strut is only on the passenger side - it is clearly used as a damper - I guess for dampening (controlling) opening and closing. The original strut was shot and hardly dampening anything. Easy to remove/replace the strut (just a small flat blade screwdriver to lift the clips, don't remove, on each end so you can pull each end off). The strut was purchased from Run Auto Parts (good price) - Stabilus brand, and seems to be from the company that made the VW Genuine strut
All in all - works excellently!
Incidentally, saw a Youtube video where a guy uses a cable tie on each spring to hold a few spring turns tightly together - makes the boot lift look like an electric motor lift!
Will install the fuel flap actuator soon when I get the spring.
Passenger-side tension spring broken! Looks like springs (on each side) lift the boot lid; moved both springs back a notch - boot opens nice and smoothly now - doesn't fly open like before! The strut was also gone - replaced it with a new one from Stabilus; the single strut acts like a damper.
I noticed a plastic part 3C8 971 615B also fell off (not damaged) - looks like it might hold/support part of the wiring loom.
