All the options below are 14 gauge ( 2mm wall ) alum coated mild steel, stainless muff/res/tips, has specific MK6 GTI dual wall 3.5" tips, all have a 3" mid pipe with resonator, all prices delivered to your door:

3" dump - 2.5" cat back, cat converter ( recommended, gives the 20% extra sound the vast majority want ) $1559

3" entire pipe with cat converter $1579 ( this is aggressively loud - sound clip on website below, I wouldnlt get one personally )

Ceramic coat for dump - +$140.

Ceramic entire pipe +$380 ( overkill )

Regardless of pipe, postage is always a few hundred on a full system, and import duty and GST kick in over the $1000 mark. Prices above include all that.

For those who claim that replacing the stock intake is a waste of time, I'm absolutely certain that every mechanical engineer on the planet would disagree with the basic premise that increasing the volume flow rate of oxygen into an internal combustion engine is a "waste of time".

Obviously, in a modern computer controlled engine, the computer will need to be tuned to get the most out of the increased oxygen, otherwise it is true that it won't make all that much difference. There was a statement that the factory intake must be engineered perfectly because it is a German car. Well, not necessarily. The intake is engineered to make the engine smooth, quiet, meet emissions and environment regulations in hundreds of countries, be economically efficient, and so on. Performance of the intake is just one element. A well engineered aftermarket intake that takes away price and noise from the equation is going to be much, much better performing than a factory item.

I've got APR stage 1 software with the full stage 2 Carbonio intake. I have done numerous road tests with and without the intake, and it makes a noticeable difference to responsiveness and low end power. The difference in high end in less noticeable but the dyno would probably pick it up. It also makes a pretty cool noise both on induction spool and blow-off/compressor flutter noise, if you're into that kind of thing.

Quick question for Greg or any other pros out there.. Is there any merit in say, wrapping the intake tubes/pipes in insulation, like exhaust wrap etc?

Yes theoretical gains due to lower intake temps. lower intake temps = better combustion. May or may not be noticeable, but can't hurt.

As above, it's just the stock MK4 GTI air/airbox/filter box, plain black plastic factory VW pipes/tubes..

Without looking at it I'd say you'd get most gains out of achieving more efficient air flow. You want as few bends as possible, consistent bore, smooth bends, plenty of cool fresh air being drawn in from grille/headlight. Heat wrap it if you want but gains will probably be negligible.
