if it's only bumping up the compression .5 you shouldn't have trouble over standard if you run 98 & proper timing. i'm not sure what effect the chip will have on it, but i can imagine in combo with with cams and schrick, there should be a bit of a gain. might only be a couple of kws though reallistically.

    just some general thoughts anyways

My biggest concern is that on a VR6 the ECU sorts everything out its self. If the tune is more aggressive than stock there will be less room for error. And if it does ping your only solution may be to mess around with different plugs or something. Lucas would be the man to chat to.. but yeah I vote dont do it!

i wouldnt think decompression would be needed unless boost is being introduced. from what i know, you want as higher compression as you can without pinging, so when boost is comin in without more space its going to ping hence decompress for more space yeah?
i wouldnt think any NA engine would need to be decomped. raising the comp on the otherhand....

by the way i believe there is a company that makes a chip that is actually tuned for a mk4 head gasket and maybe cams too. i cant remember who makes it but C2 comes to mind. i reckon that chip would be more suited to adjusting timing for higher compression than a regular generic chip.
or maybe it was GIAC, but it was definately advertised as a mk4 gasket file plus other things i think. might wanna look into that steve

Just on a point of accuracy you blokes.

A thicker head gasket will reduce compression as it will make the combustion chamber bigger. You want this on a Turbo engine as it can handle more air.
On a N/A motor you want to increase the compression to make a bigger bang and go faster. Really you need to change the pistons or mill the head to achive this.

Steve you should just put all the good stuff you have there together and have a car that works. Then whilst you are driving it, build a turbo motor on a stand and then slot it in.

the mk4 head gasket is thinner and bumps compression up to 10.5:1 instead of 10:1 I believe

I understand what you are saying mate and from our conversation over the weekend I think what you are saying is a good idea. I will give you a call in the arvo regarding tomorrow morning and the engine!
