hi guys, just an update.
john from DNA just came around with the SRS controller and it looks like my ecu is one of the new ones. He's going to double check with the guys in the uk but its not looking good
might have to consider a bench flash or go with apr

does your brother still have warranty? if so, did he have any concerns about voiding the warranty before making the decision? I've still got just under 3 years left. I know about the whole them having to prove a tune was the direct cause of fault if something was to go wrong but it's still always a risk.
Also, with a bench tune, what happens in the event where the manufacturer (in this case vw) do a upgrade of software to the ecu? Does it wipe what's on the or does it restrict them from doing this?
Thought I might ask on here before I chat again with John.
Cheers
Going with ANY brand of tune is more than likely writing off warranty on most engine and drivetrain components. Although in saying that, he has had his car serviced several times since the tune by the dealer (he does alot of km's, and it had its 45,000km service just a month or so back and its only 10-11 months old) and it has not been mentioned/been a problem.
The car may well have been checked and the dealer has noted it as being tuned, but he has not had any issues with the car so nothing has come of it just yet. Mind you, he was aware of the potential warranty issue prior to tuning.
Same here, i have taken my Golf into VW several times for warranty items and there has been no mention of my tune or aftermarket intakes, dump pipes and other parts. Mind you, my warranty claims have not been mechanical so this is probably the reason why it has not been an issue. My car is most likely flagged as being modified/tuned etc in their system.
And yes, if the dealer does an update of the software on the car it can/will wipe your tune and revert back to the stock tune. This happened to a friend here in Newcastle a few weeks ago and he had to get the tune loaded back on. This is only a quick process and most tune providers will either do it for free or for a small fee (or buy them a 6 pack etc).
This is a decision you have to make if you are thinking of tuning the car. You warranty may be compromised if you have a engine/drivetrain related failure. For me (and many other enthusiasts), this was a risk i was willing to take.
^ thats another option.

I have 83,000 on my car with an intake and tune. I did get it serviced a few times inside the dealer network with no drama, but now go indie.
My only "warranty" issue was a fix to the creaking door seals, so unrelated to engine.

Hey mate as I have been MIA from this forum, tried to catch up on most of the posts and came across this thread.
I can confirm BLUEFIN will not work on 147tsi models. Been down that path and had to wait couple of months for a refund. Our MED 17.5.2 ECUs (new gen) seems to not allow 'communication' between the OBD II port and the ecu. Even after attempting the bluefin bench flashing method, that didn't work out too.... I believe this was to do with the bluefin tune 'not spec'ed' for our newer ecus found within the MK6 147tsi Jettas... Spent almost 12 hours trying to crack it with the dealer but to no avail...
It is to my understanding however that if you wanna tune a 147tsi.. The only option is to bench flash them... There are a few options out there today...hope this helps mate?

There are different ways of communicating with the ECU's even though they may all be MED17's there are now I think 5 (or 7 versions) or encryption that you might have to 'avoid' and then there is the bluefin enable process too. It would certainly be on their list of things to do if hasn't been done already. I know there were a few updates very recently for their stuff and my own - which can certainly do this
I think the time was spent trying to access the processor so they could patch it for use via OBD - I'm too lazy to bother doing this![]()
