I had microtech on the VR6 Ibiza and it was never right, rubbish cold start and limited mapping. I had it on the dyno 3 times and it was always far from perfect.

its a far cry from VW reliability and smoothness.

I reckon buy a 20quid chip jay jay and see if that helps.

guess you have never had a good tuner then i know you guys dont like him lol but dub 20v mk4 gti on full haltech ecu is like driving a std car,, tuned by hitman injection tuning,

jay if you get a chip and its still not correct for you car you are still up the creek with no paddle....

haltech for the alot of cars now is like 1500.00 fitted,

its only a mk2 non turbo not hard to get it to run right, not like it will over boost like a turbo and and shut the ecu off..

just my 2c but i dont know ****.....

there's actually an extremely large problem with not getting it running right... that being lots of bent valves.

being a mk2 and non turbo has nothing to do with it....

if i had been convinced of the merits of standalone for this car, it would already be installed... the motor's only been out what like? 6 months...

i appreciate the ideas guys but i'm still curious as to whether someone in our neck of the woods does this.. useful for future reference too

how will that change if you tune is crap with the std ecu??? still can have bent valves if that tune is wrong...????

maybe you should have just gone 16v still prob be faster than the old 8v,

my mate had a 8v all worked ported/polished big cam 1.9l brian gti imports bottom end, on micro tech, kept up with a vr6 no probs, but still not a fast car.

hope you work it out soon should be a ruff rig. good luck...

Well I' hope this doesn't p#$% anyone off as I somehow managed to do on the 'other' forum but we are doing some older stuff, depending on what hardware is available of course. You need an eprom programmer, proper soldering gear, an eraser (depending), spare eprom and if its not already fitted an IC socket to allow future changes. You then need software to edit the various maps within the binary file so your editing software needs to be able to do that for that specific ECU. Some of the older stuff seems to fall of the radar a bit.
Depending on the vintage of the vehicles ECU the software also has to have the ability to calculate checksums which are then included in the new modified binary file.
Alternatively you may already have a tuned file from a rom provider ready to go in any case you then 'burn' this data to a new chip (hopefully you can find one) and insert it into the socket
...And then you get to the dyno. Its even easier of course if you have the whole chip ready to go

I'm doing a 98 volvo of all things shortly

    Mark

ps if the Car with the Autronic is not running well the guys that did it really had no idea.

You can buy about 100 for about $15 from China, you just have to identify which style of chip suits the MK3, if I can dig up the information I had before I'd tell you exactly what the chipset code is.

According to their FAQ's, they use a VEMS inside and then modify the I/O to suit the VAGs. I read about the VEMS a while back but it was very limited at that time but it now looks more capable widely used. I'm Interested to see how they cater for the Mk 1V's with DBW and CAN stuff. Very interesting though it certainly would solve a lot of pain if indeed it can be interfaced to your cars existing gear http://www.vems.hu/wiki/
