    Stage 1 apr tune

Thinking of getting stage 1 APR tuning. Questions?

    1. Is it worth the cost
    2. Fuel economy better/worse
    3. Effect on VW warranty

    Golf Mk 6 GTI DSG

    Thanks
    Gary

    1. Only you can judge that. Generally a stage 1 tune is good value but APR is at the high end in terms of cost for return
    2. Push it hard, worse, drive it sensibly, same or better
    3. Something goes wrong that VW can relate to the tune, possibly an issue but unlikely on a stage 1 and VW have to prove it.

    1) Yes, yes yes and yes. (and yes). One of the 2 essential mods you can make. Awesome value for money, even though others may say it's expensive - APR support is really good. Remember all this does is unlock the true potential of what your car can do, it's no magic bullet. They detune these suckers for marketing and environmental reasons - all the tune does is return the volume knob's peak to 10 instead of an imposed 6.

    2) Well, worse if you drive 'on it'.. It's producing more boost, so more power, so more fuel required. Just normal driving though, I've noticed no difference. It doesn't really draw the fuel until you start to spool up the turbo. The differences, if any, are negligible.

    3) Who cares? Seriously though, I wouldn't worry. You can always flash it back to stock and then return the tune back in again if you're really worried. You can even switch tunes using your cruise control switches, and they can't supposedly tell unless they do in-depth analysis or logging of the engine.

    Do it... No question.

I like your enthusiasm, but let's be honest about it, not misleading, so people can make the informed decision.

It's very easy for dealer to tell that the ecu was reprogrammed. On the MK6 where the ecu has to come out, it's even easier to tell, and the warranty related to the engine damage or excessive wear, failed turbocharger and on other parts could be voided.

However the reality is that I didn't see one post in the forum that it had happened. But, it doesn't guarantee that it will never happen.

It is a small risk for the added joy from driving the car that many (incl.me) are willing to take.

Miro, If you have to pull the ECU out of any Golf 6GTI - you need better tools.

My MKV Golf GTI had APR tune and I was very happy with it. Now my Golf R has APR tune, VWR CAI and APR TBE and it has surpassed my expectations. Big thankyou to Mike from Prestige and Performance. He managed to tune without removing the ECU.

    To Guy_H

Perhaps he was talking about custom built tunes, not Internet tunes ?
