It's not that they don't like being revved (not that they do rev freely - though, no VW does compared to some NA Jap cars), it's that they have no top end as the head flows like junk.

In other words, you're absolutely right, 5k is about it

Probably just a cam as the flywheel in an 8v always feels lighter than a 16v. As valver said even with a chip you wouldn't get good breathing over 5...

Jeez, I always hear people call them them the 2.slow, but what does that make mine 2.snail more like it. I basically have an exceptionally slow ... 2.slow

Thanks again for the responses, and Lorenz whats the compilation date of your car? Mines Dec 12, 97 I'd imagine yours would be quite close to that.

Now which cam to pick... hmnn...

I'm assuming LORENZ would like a set of whatever the hell I'll be putting into my car as well?

Do some proper porting and polishing and they flow great, my 8v loves to rev and makes peak power at 7100 rpm. But its had the works done to it. lightening the flywheel helps to but get it dynamically balanced or it will be out of balance.

Ill go check what the date is, but yeah Id expect it to be close to that.

EDIT: Its actually November 1996, my bad!

What ya thinkn of putting it, just a set of cams? Id love to spend some money on the 2L later on down the track, but best bang for buck would be there S/C setup

Yeah I agree on you about the head port, I'd get a set of oversized valves to match as well. How much does that cost to do anyway? Better yet does somebody here already have a ported/crossflow head?

Yeah I agree with you on the SC, but it looks like Haltec is the only way to go for our cars, the standalones start at around 1500-2000 for properly tuned ECU If you can find me a forced induction chip for less than say $500 I'd already be into a 10psi< build.

I could do it, I financially can but can't justify it. Yeah I'd probably go for the 270' cam, cam gear, 4.0 bar fuel pressure regulator, HD springs and retainers. That would set me back around $800 or there bouts fitted I'd imagine

If I can get a ported head or better yet a crossflow head from an ABA I'd be well into 16v terriotory

Hmmm, now youve put some ideas into my head (pardon the pun!)

Might have to go have a chat to my good ol' mechanic who has built some bloody awsome NA's over the years and always looking to do something different I have always wanted to build a mean NA 2L whether it be an 8 or 16V donk, it would be some fun and something different to building up a VR6 like most of the MK3 boys do!

Im off to bed, my head hurts now

270 cam is ok but you NEED a cam gear. When I bought mine autotech did it free with the cam

hahaha. my car doesn't produce any power till about 3.5k.. and doesn't idle very well.. i reckon ABA head would be the way to go.. but they're a little tricky to get a hold of in this counterflow infested country.

i had this problem with my 2L. get it checked with a vag-com thingy. mine had the fault "G40 cam position sensor outside tolerance". changed the distrubutor cap(along with hall sensor that came with it) with one we had lying around the workshop (not brand new) and the fault went away and i could rev freely to redline and past if i wanted but i didnt go any higher than red line.

every now and then the limiter at 5K would come back but for the most part it was gone. i put that down to not using a brand new distributor cap and sensor but guys at work said the signal from the hall sensor might deteriorate somewhere along the line.

so get it vag-com checked first. then check the ignition timing. or other way round, whichever floats your boat.

thats my experiance with it anyway

i was waiting to fix that problem to change cam on it but brought a vr6 soon after so that went out the window anyway lol
