R36 with stand alone ECU..?.... Now with R32 ...

    Hi all,
Currently running a '94 VR6 in my 67 kombi and generally happy how the development is going.
I'm considering upgrading to an R36 from a Passat or CC and would like advice on which standalone ECU is
suitable to run just the motor.. My current setup uses the original ECU with some wiring mods but i believe the later R36
is a more complex beast and will be difficult to get the motor to run well without major (=costly) wiring changes.

    Cheers Tony

The R36 is an MED 9 ECU and can have the immo defeated. I am pretty sure that once defeated making the rest of it work will be a walk in the park and substantially cheaper than standalone and a tune.

I'll be able to help with that. I can read and write to the ECU outside of the car.

    Thanks Gavin,
So I gather you suggest I include the factory ECU when I purchase an R36 motor..?
What should I budget on spending to get the motor electrically running in my 1967 Kombi..?

    Regards Tony

I don't own a crystal ball I am afraid. Defeating the immo will be the least of your worries. So I'd say absolutely get the ECU and as much of the cars wiring as you can. At least back to the fuse box.

I haven't done this mod before but it will be a big mouthful to chew.

Megasquirt is a good budget ecu that will run it fine.

Best option regardless of what ecu you choose is to have a fuel rail made to suit whatever injector you choose and leave the direct injection ones in head unplugged.

Fitting some injectors, would that not be an effort? Seeing as the std manifold isn't designed for them? An R32 manifold might work but you'd have to run around and find one. Then get 6 injectors large enough.

I am also wondering about the cam timing/VVT can MS handle that?

While it might seem excessive having all that modern tech in an old bus, once it's fed with fuel and electricity, it should run pretty good. Plus 4 wires and you can have diagnostics too.

    Just my 2cents

Thanks for all the positive feedback .
Some more research today has me now lowering my sights and looking for something a little less complicated.
I'm on the look out for a 2001-04 R32 motor which uses non- direct injection.

Would anyone know if the '94 2.8 VR6 ECU would run the R32 motor

    Cheers

Different ecu family. You can do the immobiliser on those too. Would run loads better on the correct ecu.

    Ok..
    Sounds good.
Given I only need ECU for engine running , tacho output and ideally cruise control , is the most cost effective option..
    1. Stock R32 ECU and pay auto elec to trim the loom and hook it up
    or
    2. Stand alone ECU with kit to hopefully allow me to connect to engine..

Get the factory wiring diagrams and do it yourself.
