Thanks for the reply. If it is the case then its an unusual system - I can spin up the wheels without intervention 90% of the time, its just this drastic power drop on occasion. Not just the sound is new, the power drop is new. Could be due to the increased power of the car I guess....
If its ESP its kicking in way too prematurely and interfering with, ahem, normal driving.
Will switch off and test it out tonight...should be fun.

In response to the OP I'd guess it's the diverter valve too. I've had no trouble with mine so far, but had the exact same situation when I put stage 1 on the old Polo 1.8T. Solved it with the R1 Diverter valve from APR instantly (plus a larger diameter air intake to let it all breath better - seat pd160 for the polo), as it would hold the increased boost compared to the stock one.
There should be quite a few DV options out there for the Roc R.

There are literally thousands of input condition variations that will directly influence the Bosch ESP system, so it will always intervene differently and with varying severity, just as the nature of your engine output will change, based on the way the ECU interprets the conditions. There are so many different factors measured in micro-seconds that it's impossible to identify a standard reaction.
Sounds a bit like the "flutter".
Try and google search "k04 Flutter" and you'll see just how many people have this. There has been many a debate whether it is infact compressor surge or the wastegate actuator not being strong enough to hold the high boost requests therefore opening and shutting. My car flutters all the time if you boot it in a higher gear at lower rpm (like Tim said).
