Thread: Polo GTI APR ECU Upgrade

  1. #81

We have been testing some new software versions yesterday & last night - I'm impressed (If you have not guessed yet, I love the Polo)

Traction seems to be an ongoing issue, I have started to get a handle on how the DSG operates / wants to operate, like all DSG's - it has a mind of its own.

Sounds like the results were better than expected?

I'm hoping you get more out of it than the equivalent golf engine.

We will be doing some on dyno stuff on Friday - I think the output will be similar to the golf - it's certainly amplified in the Polo due to the much lighter weight, thats why it feels so good!

Guy, from your experience working with the VAG product, how conservative do you believe their claims of the max torque allowable through the 7 speed DSG being 250Nm is?

The last thing I would want is to run an extra 50 or so Nm of torque through something not engineered to fully cope with it and end up with a voided warranty on probably the most expensive part of that car......

It's pretty conservative, we have well in excess of a couple of hundred tunes running on the dry clutch DSG around the country already, and they all exceed the 250 limit, and I have never heard of a mechanical breakdown of one, let alone clutch slip.

I firmly believe VW have put up that figure to scare people off tuning. Needless to say, ours will be on the track shortly with a heap more power & torque, and if we could get launch control running, I would be launching it everywhere!

Ok, cool. Would be interesting to see the excuse as to why the 'box can handle more then 250Nm on the first car they release using the same gerbox with more power and torque!

Don't suppose that the Polo might be entered into the next Hot Tuner challenge this year....?

Testing not quite complete atm I believe, still a few weeks away from being released.

Power delivery is smooth and very linear. Having owned a Stg 2 9n Polo GTI, the power is smoother without the big turbo rush of the 1.8T. Personally I prefer the 1.8T's power delivery, but if I had a 6R I'd be very happy with the new GTI and the extra APR power.

As a whole the new Polo GTI is definately a big step up, just a pity they did not use the 1.8TSI from the Audis and Skodas instead of the 1.4TSI.

We are finishing the full switching routines at the moment & all is going well. 4 programs, security, anti theft, Valet modes all tested over the weekend.

Car is off this week for exhaust upgrades & next week intake testing, so we hope to release stage 2 at the same time as stage 1.

So far no luck with the bigger turbocharger, there is not enough meat on the hot size housing to machine out for a K04 wheel set. Anyway, still working on that.

Oh, an intercooler should also give good gains, the supercharger develops LOTS of hot intake air.
