    Question P plate friendly?

Hey there, was just curious if anyone knew about any p plate restrictions on some basic performance upgrades? was looking at putting a cold air induction kit and extractors on a mk1 golf... thoughts/queries?
    Thanks guys.

I doubt anyone would really care to be honest.

The extractors are just a replacement exhaust, you can't buy original ones anymore so you have to do that to keep it roadworthy.

Cold air induction won't make a mk1 go much faster, they're more likely to pull you for being unroadworthy for the unshieled filter than bother about license retrictions.

Nope, I doubt you'd run into any troubles!

I never got pulled over in either of my mk 1's. One was very loud, the other was very low. Never had problems.

What would you suggest doing to it? (this is my first car - on a budget here too)

A stock 1600 actually goes pretty well.

Best upgrade is a Weber DGV carby on a Passat TS manifold. You'll have to wait a bit to find one of those.

    The extractors will help.

14 x 6 inch wheels from a mk2 or mk3 Golf give you more rubber on the road.

A good overhaul of the brakes would be a must, perhaps followed by an upgrade of the front brakes.

Come to DOVW this weekend and I can talk you through what's possible and you can see all the options on the cars there.

Be careful buying extractors, some give gains at low revs others at high revs. Ask yourself where do you need the extra power? How often do you drive around on the redline?

I'm a P-plater myself, as far as I know (at least in VIC) as long as all modifications are legal there is no restriction for the power.

The only thing they really restrict power on is if you have a turbo, then it turns into a 1:10 KW/weight ratio (unless it can be considered as a family car and thus it can be 1.25:10 KW/weight ratio). This is ridiculous as you can't drive the new Polo GTI with this ratio but you can drive an R32 no worries..

There are also what they call some "highly tuned" V6's that you can't use, but that's nothing to worry about unless it's on the banned list (which it's not).
