Oil in pipe going into intercooler !!

    Hi,

I have a 98 passat 1.8t, just pulled the rubber pipe going into the bottom of the intercooler and around 3 tablespoons or oil ran out. I'm thinking this isn't good. What could cause this ? bad seal in the turbo ?

Car doesn't really go as it should, I'm in the process of cleaning the MAF and throttle body, and then checking n121 sensor. Don't have a VAG Com but thinking I may need to find someone else who does.

    Cheers

A little bit of oil is normal. When the air is compresses it seperates the oil that's in it and is often found lining the pipes. I don't know about 3 table spoons worth however...

That could have accumulated over 10 years. I wouldn't worry. If the turbo seals have gone, there will be plenty more evidence behind you!!

Take your turbo inlet pipe off and have a look and feel how shaft play the turbo has up and down, side to side and in and out. If it has more than 1mm its on its way out, but as h100vw said the evidence behind you in the rear view mirror will let you no for sure. A well screwed turbo will spew blue smoke under hard excelleration!

Have you considered installing an oil catch can?
I have seen more than 3 table spoons worth collected in a catch can. Have you ever seen a catch can that is vented to the atmo? They quite often steam from the small breather filter after a hard run.

Its worth considering and its on my to do list, before I get a new FMIC.

How much oil is in the pipe there is always a little bit that will drip out after you remove it this is common on most turbo cars.
