What are you wanting to do? Flash the ECU for more power or change stuff like the central locking etc.
I can help you with either. I can flash the ECU and I have VCDS from Ross-tech.com

Hi,
Can anyone point me to a web resource which explains the difference and challenges of these ports.
I'd like to play with my program through this port as I have a friend with the software and knowlege to re-program the GTi. I have looked at Wiki but there's no specific information RE: Polo GTi and ODBII.
I'd like to know if there's a cheap ODBII interface with write capability (yes I understand these are quite expensive), maybe a blue tooth?
Cheers,
Picollo.

You want to look at logs or program the ecu?
Thanks guys,
I'd like to re-prog the ECU!
My friend can flash the ECU but needs to come out the car to do it, he says.
I don't want to remove the ECU, though. I'd like to use the ODBII to do it which is why I'd like to know about these devices. I understand that there are read-only and write capable devices... I want one so that I can modify my boost, timing, fuel etc.
Thanks!
If you want your Polo flashing, I can do that through the port. No messing and I have done it before to plenty of Polo's.
The gear you are talking of isn't cheap and there's plenty of scope for it going wrong. Too much investment for a one off that's for sure.

I can see that you want to have your friend "tune" your car over OBD rather than going for an off the shelf tune from one of us tuners; if you don't want to blow your budget you can look into some tools like the Galletto; before becoming a DNA Tuning reseller I had moderate success using one of these with an ME7 car.
At the end of the day however, if you want a proper software upgrade, you can't really go past an off the shelf tune from a reputable tuner. Lots of effort and development has gone into tweaking a wide range of maps and parameters in the ECU to ensure decent yet safe power gains under a variety of conditions. With prices for older models like the 9N3 now dropping very low, it is probably the most viable option in extracting more power from your GTI.

What experience does your friend have with VAG tuning? This is not a Nissan...
Lots. But he has moved on. He has worked with the A-Z of manufacturers here and abroad but no longer has access to that lovely expensive equipment.
Unfortunately, the company he (and I - briefly) worked for were screwed over by someone who will remain nameless and have been consigned to the scrap heap of history from about 7 years ago.
