Mk1 Golf. Distributor upgrade.?

I have a Mk1 Golf [ well actually Scirocco - same thing ] and it has the standard Distributor. The Engine also has Extractors and Twin Dellortos.
So this Dizy should have vacuum advance and Vac retard.
In fact mine has no hoses connected. When checking with a timing light, there seems to be very little advance movement on the timing.

What is a good improvement for a Set up like this?
[ should I just connect the vac adv ? ] If I do connect the vac adv - does it need to be in a [ " Vac closed Off " at idle position.?????? ]

Tell them about your motor and they'll set it up for mechanical advance and remove the vacuum can altogether.

Costs about $100 and they'll test it out, rebuild it and re-curve it to suit your motor.

They turn them around pretty quick too, usually about 48 hours.

Yes. Something like a MSD Midget Dis 2 would completely replace the distributor. Midget DIS-2 Programmable Race Ignition - 6214

You could use other MSD options too but you still need to fix the dizzy to fire it.

Another option is to use the electronic dizzy out of a MK2 or Cabrio and have that modded. That at least gets rid of the points.

All of the stuff that's sold for the 009 dizzys for the aircooled VWs will go into the Golf dizzys too, so there's plenty of options there.

There's a couple of Jaycar kits too if you're handy with a soldering iron.

I put on some 8mm Silicon leads.
Dismantled the old Dizzy with its Vacuum pots & tiny mechanical advance section. You know - drilled out the steel pin that holds the Gear on, had it in 50 pieces..... Found what restricts the Mechanical advance. Got out the grinder and modified the levers that turn the advance. Decided to try the 2 light springs for that quicker movement. Put it all together with lubrication, new pin in the gear drive.......
It is Fantastic . !!! ..!!!
No flat spots, Revs out hard to 6 k quickly and smoothly.... I suspect it goes better than with the electronic unit.
The other useful mod I did was to cable from battery to relay {right next to battery} - then coil { total run 250mm in thick cable}.
