More importantly, they're incredibly rigid, and when they do fail, they crack and splinter, and a stiff bonnet or those splinters (which are very sharp) would potentially make a mess of a pedestrian.
There are some CF-looking bonnets around, where they're largely fibreglass with a layer of CF (or something that looks like CF) in them, but they're nowhere near as light as true CF bonnets, and probably save very little weight overall.
The Mk4 R32 didn't even come with a space saver spare IIRC. I'm kinda surprised they bothered with the R32. But they do weigh enough to make a difference if you remove them, I'm considering removing mine from my Bora and replacing it with a can of tyre goo and a compressor.
